Description

This invention relates to a terminal for connecting cables to the positive and negative poles of electric automobile batteries. Currently, the terminals for connecting cables to the positive and negative poles of electric batteries, for example automobile batteries, each consist of a metallic element, generally of lead, in the shape of a C having, on one side , a part for the connection of an electric cable and, on the open side, two fins to be connected and brought together by means of a transverse tightening screw when the terminal and coupled and locked at the corresponding pole of the battery.

When the terminals conditioned in this way have been connected to the poles of the battery, they result totally exposed to the oxidizing atmosphere and / or to accidental contacts. For this reason it is necessary to equip each terminal, or at least the one connected to the positive pole of the battery, with a pro cap. guard against oxidation and against unwanted contact.

In addition, the blocking of these terminals at the poles of the battery by means of the clamping screws involves their permanent deformation and hence each terminal tends to remain blocked at the corresponding pole even when the clamping screw is loosened. As a result, it is quite difficult to detach the terminal for maintenance or replacement of the battery and in general it is necessary to use a tool to loosen and remove the terminal.

In addition, each terminal is quite often fixed to its cable by means of screws which, moreover, do not exclude the possibility of accidental detachment of the cable and hence the interruption of the circuit supplied by the battery.

By cons, the present invention relates to a terminal for connecting cables to the poles of electric car batteries according to claim 1).

The object of this invention is to eliminate the above-mentioned drawbacks and disadvantages, its main aim being that of proposing a terminal comprising a body endowed with an intrinsic elasticity capable of promoting the automatic opening of the terminal and thus its immediate detachment from the corresponding pole as soon as the clamping screw is released.

Another object of the invention is to propose a terminal which is advantageously self-protective against any form of oxidation and external contact, thereby eliminating the need to apply protective elements or additional caps thereto.

Yet another object of the invention is to provide a terminal in which the end of the electric cable connected thereto is inserted into the metal part of the terminal and covered and stopped by the protective coating of this metal part so as to ensure permanent fixing of the cable and preventing accidental detachment.

  • la Fig. 1 montre une vue schématique d'une batterie avec câbles connectés aux pôles correspondants au moyen de bornes;
  • les Figures 2 et 3 montrent deux exemples de bornes avec et sans paroi protectrice supérieure pour le pôle positif et négatif de la batterie respectivement;
In any case, more precise details of the object of invention will result from the description below given with reference to the attached drawing in which:
  • Fig. 1 shows a schematic view of a battery with cables connected to the corresponding poles by means of terminals;
  • Figures 2 and 3 show two examples of terminals with and without an upper protective wall for the positive and negative pole of the battery respectively;
  • Fig. 4 shows a section of the terminal of which in FIG. 2; and
  • Fig. 5 shows the section of a terminal along a line parallel to the plane.

The proposed terminal consists substantially of a metallic element 10 , normally of lead, electrically connected to the end 11 of at least one electrical cable 12 inserted in a protective body 13 molded in plastic.

The metallic or lead element 10 consists of an open ring 14 with a part 15 in which the exposed end 11 of the electric cable is inserted. The plastic body 13 is pressed on the metal element 10 to enclose and protect it, including the part 15 for housing the cable and also the end of the latter, while the inner surface of the open ring 14 remains uncovered.

On the open side of the ring 14, the plastic body 13 also has two fins 16 provided with transverse holes 16ʹ for housing a clamping screw 17 intended to bring the two fins together and to tighten the open ring 14 when the terminal is applied to a pole 18 of the battery 19 .

The protective plastic body 13 gives the terminal a high degree of elasticity to allow automatic opening and therefore detachment of the ring from the battery pole and immediate release of the terminal as soon as the tightening screw has was released, even when it had been blocked for a long time.

Finally, it should be noted that at least the terminal intended to couple to the positive pole of the battery may have, in its upper part, a wall 20 molded with the protective body 13 and intended to cover and enclose the opening delimited by the open ring 14 and in this way protect the pole of the battery and also the ring 14 against oxidation and against any external contact.
