The Maryland Superintendent of Schools is a position in the Maryland state government. The superintendent is selected by the State Board of Education for a renewable four-year term and serves as secretary-treasurer to the board. However, the superintendent does not have a vote on the board, as the other board members do.[1]

Authority

The Maryland Superintendent of Schools' powers are derived from the Education Statute of the Maryland Code of Public General Laws.

Section 2–103:

(a) Acting under the bylaws, rules, and regulations of the State Board, the State Superintendent is responsible for the administration of the Department and has general supervision of all professional and clerical assistants of the Department.
(b) The State Superintendent shall be appointed and has the general powers and duties as provided in Subtitle 3 of this title.[2]

Duties

The superintendent directs the State Department Of Education and executes policy and regulations put forth by the Board of Education.[3] The superintendent also directly oversees the Division of Library Development and Services and the Division of Rehabilitation Services.
