Lewis Powell
Lewis Franklin Powell, Jr. (September 19, 1907-August 25, 1998) was a justice on the Supreme Court of the United States. He joined the court in 1971 after a nomination by President Richard Nixon. He assumed senior status on June 26, 1987, and served until his death on August 25, 1998. Prior to joining the court, Powell was a private practice attorney in Virginia.[1]
Powell was one of six justices nominated to the Supreme Court by President Nixon, though only one of four confirmed. Powell served during The Burger Court and The Rehnquist Court.[2]
Early life and education
Powell received a B.S. degree from Washington and Lee University in 1929. He received a LL.B. degree from Washington and Lee University School of Law in 1931 and an LL.M. from Harvard Law School in 1932.[1]

Professional career
Powell spent the majority of his career in private practice in Richmond, Virginia. He also spent nine years as Chairman of the Richmond Public School Board.[1]
Judicial nominations and appointments
Supreme Court of the United States
Powell was nominated to the Supreme Court by President Richard M. Nixon on October 22, 1971, to a seat vacated by Justice Hugo Black. He was confirmed by the Senate on December 6, 1971, and received commission on December 9, 1971. He assumed senior status on June 26, 1987 and served until his death on August 25, 1998.[1] He was succeeded to this post by Justice Anthony Kennedy.
