James Hughes Hancock was a federal judge with the United States District Court for the Northern District of Alabama. He joined the court in 1973 after being nominated by President Richard Nixon (R). Early life and education

A native of Montgomery, Alabama, Hancock earned his bachelor's degree from the University of Alabama in 1953 and his LL.B. from the University of Alabama School of Law in 1957.[1]

Military service

Hancock served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Army from 1953 to 1955.[1]

Judicial career

Northern District of Alabama

Hancock was nominated by President Richard Nixon (R) on March 20, 1973, to a seat on the United States District Court for the Northern District of Alabama vacated by Judge Seybourn Lynne. Hancock was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on April 10, 1973, and he received his commission on April 17, 1973. Hancock elected to take senior status beginning on May 1, 1996.[1] Hancock was succeeded in this position by Judge Inge Johnson. His service officially ended on July 24, 2020, when he died.[1]
