Charles Wycliffe Joiner was a federal judge for the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan.

Joiner was nominated by President Richard Nixon on April 25, 1972, to a seat vacated by Talbot Smith; he was confirmed by the Senate on June 8, 1972, and received commission the next day. He assumed senior status on August 15, 1984, and served as a senior judge until his death on March 10, 2017.[1][2]

Early life and education

Joiner graduated from the University of Iowa with his bachelor's degree in 1937 and later graduated from Iowa Law with his J.D. degree in 1939. He also served as a U.S. Army Air Corps Lieutenant from 1943 to 1945.[1]

Professional career

Joiner was a private practice attorney in Iowa from 1939 to 1947 before moving to Michigan to become a faculty member of Michigan Law from 1947 to 1965 and also served as the associate dean of Michigan Law from 1960 to 1968 and was acting dean of Michigan Law from 1965 to 1966. He served as a Alderman for the City of Ann Arbor from 1955 to 1959. From 1961 to 1962 he served as the director of research and drafting for the Constitutional Convention of the State of Michigan. Joiner was also dean and professor of law at Wayne State from 1967 to 1972 and a lecturer in law at Michigan Law from 1974 to 1984.[1]
