Do You Remember The First Time You Watched Avatar/Star Wars In The Cinema?

by Robert Wainfur One of my most vivid childhood memories was in 1977 when I was taken to the cinema by my brother to watch a movie that to be honest I wasn't that much aware of. After all, I was five years old at the time. Of course that movie was Star Wars. We queued up for two hours around the cinema willing the queue to move, sometimes it did but only because someone had left or someone had cut in! Eventually that queue did move and we made it inside. Those next couple of hours changed my life forever. An overload on the senses ingrained in my head within two hours that would remain with me for the rest of my life and ultimately influence me and my interests. It changed me into a sci-fi geek, almost assimilating me into its culture. The amazing special effects, the characters and that John Williams soundtrack (which I was asking my brother to hum to me on the way home) took me by surprise and I wanted more. The British documentary called Horizon (that is still going today) goes into a lot of detail especially focusing on Return Of The Jedi and Indiana Jones. Lucasfilm Storms the NY Stock Exchange

Lucas Licensing exec rings Opening Bell as Star Wars remains number one selling licensed toy brand. Executives and guests of Lucasfilm and the Star Wars Saga have visited the New York Stock Exchange to celebrate the continued success of the evergreen brand. After more than 30 years, Star Wars is the number one selling licensed toy property in the US, with sales over 60 per cent ahead of any other toy licence, and 25 per cent ahead of the nearest boys toy property (Source: Lucasfilm Ltd.) To mark the occasion, Lucas Licensing’s Howard Roffman rang the Opening Bell accompanied by a number of characters including droid R2-D2, Sith Lord Darth Vader and a color guard of stormtroopers and clone troopers.

Spielberg, Kidman and Worthington to present at the Golden Globe Awards

LOS ANGELES — Steven Spielberg, Nicole Kidman and "Avatar" star Sam Worthington are joining the list of celebrity presenters at the Golden Globe Awards. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which puts on the Golden Globes, says the three stars will help hand out trophies at the 67th annual ceremony. They join previously announced presenters Jennifer Aniston, Halle Berry, Julia Roberts, Mickey Rourke, Colin Farrell, Matthew Fox, Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro. The Golden Globe Awards will be held Jan. 17 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills and will air live on NBC.

Drew helps honour Steven Spielberg

Drew Barrymore managed to sneak past press at a special dinner honouring her long-time friend Steven Spielberg. The actress avoided photographers and the red carpet entirely, instead heading straight into the gala party at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles where the director was receiving Americas Democratic Legacy Award. Steven received the honour from the Anti-Defamation League which fights against bigotry, prejudice and anti-Semitism. The organisation describes the director as "a true champion of human rights through his film and television projects". Previous recipients have included former US president Ronald Reagan, John F Kennedy, Colin Powell and Eleanor Roosevelt. Speaking as the evening got under way, Steven described receiving the honour as "wonderful". American Idol's Adam Lambert, who was there to perform for the evening, said he was looking forward to seeing Drew and Steven together. "I love ET, I love that movie - it's fantastic!" he...
