Croydon Tramlink
Page 1: The Fleet
This one of a series of pages devoted to postcards and photographs of Croydon Tramlink. This page illustrates the tram fleet.

shows the routes.
Following a study in 1987, the Croydon Tramlink Parliamentary Bill was deposited in 1991. Construction started in 1996, using a significant amount of former railway alignment, rail services from Wimbledon to Mitcham, and to Elmers End ceasing in 1997. On the section from Birkbeck to Beckenham Junction, the line was singled so the tramway could run in parallel. Public services on the three lines started during May 2000. Initially the three routes were Route 1: Wimbledon-Croydon-Elmers End, Route 2: Croydon-Beckenham Junction and Route 3: Croydon-New Addington, all three routes circumnavigating Croydon town centre in a clockwise direction. From 2006, routes were revised so that Route 3 trams from New Addington continued through to Wimbledon (in place of Route 1). 2007 weekday off peak frequencies are every 10 minutes on Routes 1 and 2, and every 7.5 minutes on the through Wimbledon-New Addington Route 3. The unofficial Tramlink site
www.tramlink.co.uk
contains a set of timetables from the inauguration to current.
The tram fleet consists of 24 articulated vehicles numbered
2530-2553
, manufactured by Bombardier Transportation in Wien. The numbers follow on from the last vehicle in the original London Transport system, 2529, which was scrapped in 1952. Classified as
CR-4000
, the new trams are based very closely on Bombardier's K-4000 trams as used in Köln. These are 76% low floor at 400mm above rail height with entrances at 350mm. The overhead is at 750volts dc and trams have four 120kW 3-phase asynchronous motors fitted to the two, two-axle power bogies at the outer ends, giving a maximum speed of 80kph (50mph). Each tram carries over 200 people with 70 seated. At one point more than 25% of trams carried advertising liveries, although none remained early in November 2007. However,
2548
had received Simpsons Movie vinyls by the end of that month. All the CR-4000 trams have been photographed and are listed below.
In 2012 deliveries began of six
Stadler Variobahn
trams to ease overcrowding. The Variobahn (also known as Variotram) tram family was launched in 1993, and has been built variously by ABB, Adtranz, Bombardier Transportation and since 2001 by Stadler Rail.
The Variobahn trams for Tramlink were ordered by Transport for London in August 2011 at a cost of 16.3 million. TfL has an option for up to 8 more trams. Three of the Croydon trams were diverted from a batch of five which were ordered for the Bybanen line in Bergen, Norway. The first tram, 2554, was delivered to Croydon on 24 January 2012 and carried its first passengers on 30 March 2012. (Ref: Wikipedia)
