adult ------- up to 2 weeks

ZIGZAG LEAFHOPPER
(Recilia dorsalis)
egg --------- 6 -12 days
nymph ----- 16 (5 instars)
adult -------- 10 -14 days

-both can transmit tungro, orange leaf and dwarf viruses;

- adults are attracted to light
Green leafhoppers
Nephotettix sp. (Cicadellidae :HOMOPTERA)

virescens (Distant)

nigropictus (Stal)
Brown planthopper
(Nilaparvata lugens (Stal) (Delphacidae: HOMOPTERA)
BROWN PLANTHOPPER
egg -------- 6-9 days
nymph ---- 11 -12 days
adult ------- 15 – 30 days
- transmit ragged stunt and grassy stunt viruses
- causes hopperburn, excrete honey dew = sooty molds

WHITE-BACKED PLANTHOPPER
(Sogatella furcifera)
-not known to transmit virus, causes hopperburn; severe
infestation = molds
- rare in upland; either winged or wingless

2 types present in the field:

Brachypterous – have small wings, no flight
Macropterous – with wings, migratory
Field with medium (30-50% damage) BPH infestation
FIELD WITH HIGH (70-90% DAMAGE) BPH INFESTATION
Rice Stemborer
(Scirpophaga incertulas (Walker)
(Scirpophaga innotata (Walker)
Pyralidae :LEPIDOPTERA)

yellow stemborer white stemborer

Slender rice bugs
Leptocorisa oratorius (Fabricius), Alydidae :HEMIPTERA
RICE BLACK BUG
Scotinophara coarctata Fab.

Egg ------- 3 - 5 days

Nymph --- 30 - 60 days
Adult ------ up to 7 months

- greenish-pink eggs (40-60) on basal parts of rice plant; well

guarded by the female (200 eggs); nymph molts 4-5X;
- infestation at tillering results in deadhearts; cont’d feeding turns
leaves to brown, reduces tillering & causes stunting
- panicles fail to develop when infestation starts at booting stage
which mimics whiteheads
- can also feed on panicles causing brown spots on injured grains
- saliva is toxic; severe infestation cause bug burn similar to
hopper burn
