The year is 872 and many of the individual Kingdoms, what we now know as England, fell during the invasion of the Danes. The Kingdom of Wessex led by King Alfred is on its own. Against this turbulent background, we see a Saxon nobleman and his son Uhtred of Bebbanburg. The boy is captured by the Danes and raised as one of their own. Where does his loyalty lie? Is he a Saxon or a Dane? Will Uhtred choose his native land or those who raised him? To regain his birthright, Uhtred must walk a perilous path between the two sides and plays an important role in the birth of a new nation.
