The Ruins plot

"Terror has evolved."

Countless young Americans come every year to the radiant sun, the nice water and the many sandy beaches, in search of not too expensive entertainment. So are Amy (Jena Malone) and Stacy (Laura Ramsey), two friends with their very different boyfriends, the serious medical student Jeff (Jonathan Tucker) and the partying freebooter Eric (Shawn Ashmore). At the end of their vacation, the foursome heads into the Mexican jungle to view Mayan ruins. As they stand admiring the fantastic building, something happens that sends them terrified to the top of the crumbling stone structure. It turns out that there are terrifying and life-threatening forces that force them into a fierce fight to the death.

Nice.

The Ruins is the second recent adventure horror I've seen, and one that also takes place in a faraway exotic land. The other movie I saw fairly recently was Turistas, which was also quite entertaining but still can't quite match The Ruins. They are both very smooth.

The Ruins takes a short introduction that feels just a bit longer. The pace that is just too slow does not really work in favor and creates a long-winded feeling. Once we make the switch to horror, the viewer gets a bit more experience to offer. That experience is quite ridiculous, but fortunately also very entertaining and fast.

Visually, the film has some nice graphics and the CGI just meets. There are some ugly animated moves here and there but overall it looks fine. The decoration of the temple also looks nice. The film doesn't get very exciting, but it does get pretty nasty.

The gore is sometimes nice and hard and explicit, although it will never win any prizes. Fortunately, there are painful moments to be seen and it looks realistic enough. The threat itself isn't exactly scary, but what it can do is a little scarier. But carnivorous plants will just never be the scariest enemy I guess.

Acting is also good. Ramsey plays very strong, completely surprising because normally she doesn't really stand out to me. Tucker is also doing well. Malone and Ashmore are slightly less than the aforementioned, but otherwise satisfactory. In any case, there is believable enough acting by everyone.

Nice movie with a fair amount of filth. It also takes 93 minutes not exactly long, so you can get through it very quickly. Furthermore, it feels a bit long-winded here and there and it is far from exciting, but fun entertainment for once.

After a considerable number of years, reconsider and add another half point. Still a very underrated horror.

Short construction, which means that we arrive at the scene of the disaster fairly quickly. And that's where it gets pretty fucked up. It's pretty exciting, pretty gross, original and also more than well acted. Jonathan Tucker is especially a fine actor.

The ending may be a bit abrupt, but it shouldn't spoil the fun of the past hour and a half. Recommend this.

The Ruins

Exciting film that had a good pace, in which you don't get bored easily. After a short introduction of the characters we soon end up at the ruins, where all the misery begins. . A beautiful setting, also on a ruin where they are surrounded by the locals, quite a plight. Here and there there were a few illogical choices and of course there must be quarrel again within the group, but what do you want if you are among the living plants and there is no seems to be a way out. It even got bloody a few times.

3 stars.
