Movies with special meaning for me

Sort by: Showing 12 items

If something I've laughed warmly in my childhood has been watching films starring Jerry Lewis. I remember the first noted here, Who's Minding the Store? as well as The Disorderly Orderly. The sadness was observed that, to see them again as an adult, I enjoyed not so intensely...

Very different sensations caused me watch this movie when I was 9 or 10 years old. The terrifying flying skeleton, the witch daughter and, above all, his mummified mother (La Llorona) wrapped in spider web and always ready to return to the life, horrified me as I didn't do anything in my childhood.

Fantomas (1964)

The disparate and rather boring series of three films directed by André Hunebelle Fantomas (1964 - 1965 - 1967) was a major attraction / repulsion for me in the character played by Jean Marais. Its characterization as criminal sowed of nightmares many nights of my childhood. Impossible to forget that aspect, this vampiric impossible mask with greenish tones as soon as violet. Simply horrifying.

A teen Olivia Hussey got the child I was then fall in love madly just saw her in Romeo and Juliet. No doubt, she was my first love emerged from the silver screen. It was a matinee and I ventured to the parental rebuke to stay to see her again in evening session.

The zombie movie that marked an era. A seminal title of the few who deserve the appellation "cult". One of the best examples of that on a shoestring budget can be great movies. Particularly it is the first movie I remember as an adult got terrify because everything in it is shown next to the documentary and it looks as real as the worst nightmare.

Women in Love (1969)

While not a great film, Women in Love shocked me when I saw a teenager. I guess it was because of a story that mixed passion whether in friendship and in love and intended to be unconventional. Here I also fell in love, but this time in a cabin in the woods.

Years after Romeo and Juliet, this film came to replace it among my favorite romantic movie titles. The love story between the student and the young nobleman struck a chord in my newfound youth. The beautiful forest landscapes and medieval castles round finished this predilection.

In my opinion, The Honeymoon Killers (1969) is the first major film about serial killers, despite the lack of recognition he deserves even today. Until I saw Man Bites Dog (C'est arrivé près de chez vous) (1992) many years later, I didn't feel obliged to close my eyes again to not attend any of his macabre sequences...

Although the movie Belgian shares an almost documentary aesthetic in black and a refined taste for gory details, the film directed by Kastle not abuse them and added some notes of black humor that make the product more palatable. Special mention deserves the extraordinary Shirley Stoler in his role as mad love.

It's hard to explain what I feel could make this movie when I first saw it. Possibly it were a catatonic state could recover only watching the movie a second time. The last adjective I would use to define it would be to horror. Nothing to do with "La Llorona", Fantomas or all of the Hammer's Dracula that terrorized my childhood nights. Perhaps it might be more fitting fascination. But equally enchantment, possession, snatch...
I hastened to buy a copy of four coils in super 8mm. with labels in German (which a friend of a cousin of mine translated into Spanish). For a while I organized meetings with film Nosferatu protagonist among my group of friends. Definitely the film I've seen more times and still today it thrills me to see any sequence of this film.

Rath's rating:

With no other film I've laughed so much. Lubitsch's film opens spaces, is creative and amazing and improves each sequence. For me it is the best title of the german director and one of my ten favorite movies.

Viridiana (1961)

After Nosferatu, Viridiana is the film I've seen more times. It is also one of the few films that made me short, I wished that lasted more minutes, and remember that whole sequences of dialogues memory. Because everything that happens in it everyday surprises that may seem and know how to combine comedy and drama skillfully and fluently. When I first saw it, I still very young, it was almost a school of life for me.

The Mascot (1933)

The short (lasting less than 30 min.) is a unique compendium of various techniques, animated dolls and objects of all kinds, interspersing brief appearances of humans and even live action street environments. Here there is nothing that can stop indifferent to the smallest of details (and the film is an unbroken succession of them) may acquire, at once, a role: until a few strands of straw drawn by a devilish wind can come alive and walk as if nothing...

The Mascot is a great, an indisputable masterpiece absolutely recommended and the last movie that got me speechless.
