Is the KGM Motors Torres a good car?
The KGM Torres is a big family SUV from a brand you’ve probably never heard of. KGM Motors is the new name of SsangYong, a niche Korean car maker that’s been selling respectable if uninspiring SUVs in the UK for years now.
It’s a bit like when Twitter changed its name to X. It largely does the same thing as before, but with a fresh focus on the future.
And that’s where this new model comes in. While the SsangYong-era Rexton and Korando continue to be sold, the Torres is the first new model under the KGM brand.
In price and size it’s an alternative to seven-seaters like the Nissan X-Trail and Peugeot 5008, but as a five-seater it’s perhaps more likely to be a left-field choice if you’re looking at regular family SUVs such as the Nissan Qashqai, Hyundai Tucson and Mini Countryman.
Convincing you to part with your cash for an unknown brand over those brilliant, well-established alternatives is a tough ask, but the Torres does at least come with a smart, stylish exterior design that looks fresh compared with many of the dull SUVs you might also consider.
The KGM Torres promises to be big and practical, but it’s tough to ignore the fact that there are excellent alternatives at this price
The interior isn’t quite as in-yer-face as the outside, but the multi-layered design has a few of the same sharp edges as the exterior that give it some character. There’s a pair of 12.5-inch displays, though with few physical buttons it seems the majority of functions are controlled through these screens, so they’d better be clear and responsive.
At least space shouldn’t be a problem. Sharing dimensions with seven-seaters but being strictly limited to five means the boot is massive – at 703 litres it’s bigger than most alternatives you’ll be considering.
There’s an electric version called the Torres EVX, but the regular model reviewed here comes with a 1.5-litre petrol engine making 163hp. Official figures put it at 33mpg, so it’s not hugely economical, though a hybrid version is coming in 2025 which should address this.
Pricing is the biggest challenge for the KGM Torres. It starts at around £33,000 and rises above £38,000 for top-spec models, which makes it a good chunk more expensive than entry level versions of the Nissan Qashqai and Mini Countryman, and closer to the seven-seat Nissan X-Trail and Skoda Kodiaq.
