Mamluk-Kipchak

Modern ve objektif anlamda, Türk din tarihini sistematik ve bilimsel bir yaklaşımla ele alan tarih araştırmalarının yetersizliği ortadadır. XI. ve XII. yüzyıllarda Karadeniz'i kuzeyinde geniş bir alana yayılarak siyasi bakımdan etkili olan Kıpçak Türkleri, bu araştırma alanlarından biridir. Onların, Müslümanlık, Hıristiyanlık ve Yahudilik gibi evrensel dinlerle tanışmaları, çeşitli milletler ile karşılaşıp farklı kültürler ile tanışmaları, araştırmanın önemini ortaya koymaktadır. Siyasi tarihleri incelenmemiş olan ve dini tarihler konusunda da hiçbir araştırma bulunmayan bu Türk topluluğunun incelenip ortaya çıkarılması, diğer Türk topluluklarının araştırılmasına örnek teşkil edecektir.

Araştırmanın birinci bölümünde Kıpçakların siyasi tarihi ve yayıldıkları alanlar, menşei, komşuları ile olan ilişkileri, göçleri ve günümüzde bulundukları bölgeler aydınlatılmaya çalışılmıştır. "Kıpçaklarda Kültür ve Medeniyet" adlı ikinci bölümde de Kıpçakların dili, Kıpçak Türkçesi ile yazılmış eserler, Kıpçaklarda aile yapısı, kadının statüsü, ekonomik durum ile sanat ve mimarlık anlayışı verilmeye gayret edilmiştir. Araştırmanın üçüncü bölümünde ise Kıpçakların dini tarihi, "geleneksel Türk din tarihi içinde Kıpçakların yeri", "Kıpçaklar ve İslamiyet", "Kıpçaklar ve Hıristiyanlık" ve "Kıpçaklar ve Yahudilik" konuları ele alınmıştır.

The Mamluk inscription on the Facade of the Main Entrance to the St. James Monastery of Jerusalem is one of the most significant ones given by the Sultan the nicknamed Chaqmaq in 1450 C.E. The inscription is one of the rare inscriptions given to the Armenians that the monastery and the Armenian monks are tax exempted and cursed be the one who renews or inflicts injustice upon the same.

Identifying loanwords in any language is important to unveil its own lexicon as well as
to observe with what communities speakers of that language were in cultural and political relationship. Mamluk-Kipchak period is one of the most productive terms in Turkic lexicography. Loanwords in Mamluk-Kipchak glossaries were meticulously defined and explained about their origin by some authors but by others  they were considered Turkic. In this paper, loanwords in Kitabü’l-İdrak li Lisâni’l-Etrâk, which is the work of Abu Hajjan, have been discussed and clarified about their origins.

Аннотация. В данной статье рассматривается вопрос о этногенетической истории кимаков в IX-XI ве-ках. Можно выделить как минимум четыре важных вопроса в научных исследованиях истории кимаков в IX-XI веках. 1 Время появления кимаков на Иртыше. 2 Соотношение названий Йемек (Имек) и Кимак (Ки-мек). 3 Этногенетические исследования палеоДНК кимаков и кипчаков. 4 Противоречие сведений Худуд ал Алам и ал-Идриси касательно кимаков. В данной статье будут затронуты эти четыре аспекта. Ключевые слова: Кимаки, Кипчаки, Сибирь, Средние века, аль-Идриси, Худуд ал Алам. Abstract. This article discusses the ethnogenetic history of Kimaks in the IX-XI centuries. At least four important questions can be distinguished in the scientific studies of the history of the Kimaks in the IX-XI centuries. 1. The time of the Kimaks appearance on the Irtysh. 2. The relations between the tribal names Yemek (Imek) and Kimak (Kimek). 3. Ethnogenetic studies of paleoDNA of medieval Kimaks and Kipchaks. 4. The contradiction of the information of Khudud al Alam and al-Idrisi regarding kimaks. This article will address four of these aspects.

Özet: Çalışmanın genelinde, belirlenen Eski Türkçe dinî terimlerin izi Karahanlı ve Memlük-Kıpçak sahası eserlerinde sürülmüş, ses, biçim ve anlam açısından geçirdikleri dönüşüme tanıklık edilmiştir. Aynı zamanda incelenen eserler Eski Türkçe dinî terimleri ne ölçüde içerdikleri açısından değerlendirilmiştir. Bu makaleyi oluşturan ilk bölümde ise Tanrı’nın isimleri ve sıfatları üzerinde durulmuştur.

Abstract: In this study, predefined Old Turkish religious terminology will be traced in Karakhanli and Memluk-Kipchak Turkish through religious and non-religious authorities and it will be questioned if there are changes phonetically, morphologically or semantically and the authorities will be examined in their position about holding Old Turkish religious terms. This article which is the first part of the study focuses on names and adjectives used for The God.

Starting from 135 manuscripts that were once part of the library of the late Mamluk sultan Qāniṣawh al-Ghawrī (r. 1501–1516), this book challenges the dominant narrative of a “post-court era”, in which courts were increasingly marginalized in the field of adab. Rather than being the literary barren field that much of the Arabic and Arabic-centred sources, produced extra muros, would have us believe, it re-cognizes Qāniṣawh’s court as a rich and vibrant literary site and a cosmopolitan hub in a burgeoning Turkic literary ecumene. It also re-centres the ruler himself within this court. No longer the passive object of panegyric or the source of patronage alone, Qāniṣawh has an authorial voice in his own right, one that is idiosyncratic yet in conversation with other voices. As such, while this book is first and foremost a book about books, it is one that consciously aspires to be more than that: a book about a library, and, ultimately, a book about the man behind the library, Qāniṣawh al-Ghawrī.

Originaire pour la plupart des steppes eurasiatiques du Kipchak, région réputée pour son peuple de cavaliers, et achetés pour être formés à la guerre, ceux qu’on appelle les Mamelouks furent propulsés sur le devant de la scène dans le sillage de la septième croisade. Qui aurait pu penser que c’est sur les épaules de ces esclaves-soldats étrangers et nouvellement convertis à l’islam que le sort de territoires de l’Islam allait reposer pendant plusieurs décennies ? Et pourtant, ce sont bien les Mamelouks qui, dix ans à peine après leur prise du pouvoir en Egypte, portèrent pour un temps l’étendard de l’Islam lequel menaçait de tomber face à divers dangers extérieurs. En un peu plus d’un demi-siècle, les Mamelouks réussirent là où beaucoup d’autres dynasties musulmanes échouèrent : ils réussirent à mettre fin à l'existence des États latins d’Orient, au royaume d’Arménie-Cilicie, à soumettre le royaume de Nubie et, surtout, à arrêter les invasions mongoles. Ce dernier exploit est, en grande partie, à l’origine du prestige et de la réputation militaire des Mamelouks. Au cours des XIIIe et XIVe siècles, les sultans et émirs mamelouks mirent sur pied l’une des armées les plus puissantes du Proche-Orient. Plus qu’un métier, la guerre était la raison d’être des Mamelouks. A partir de l’analyse et de la confrontation des sources arabes, latines, arméniennes et persanes, Mehdi Berriah a réalisé plusieurs études sur l’art de la guerre de ces cavaliers hors pair dont certaines sont rassemblées dans cet ouvrage.

Bu tez çalışmasında, Memlûk-Kıpçak sahası eserlerinden biri olan Et-Tu?fetü'z-Zekiyye Fi'l-Lu?ati't-Türkiyye adlı sözlük-gramerin söz varlığı (Fiil), modern Kıpçak lehçelerinden biri olan Kazan Tatar Türkçesi ile artzamanlı olarak karşılaştırılmıştır. Tez, temel olarak, giriş, inceleme ve sonuç bölümlerinden müteşekkildir. Tezin giriş bölümünde, Memlûk sahasında yazılmış eserlerin dili ve Kazan Tatar Türkçesi hakkında bilgi verilmiş, aynı zamanda Memlûk sahasında yazılmış sözlük-gramerler tanıtılmıştır.İnceleme bölümünde, Et-Tuhfetü'z-Zekiyye Fi'l-Lu?ati't-Türkiyye adlı eserden tespit edilen fiiller, Kazan Tatar Türkçesindeki biçimleriyle karşılaştırılmıştır. Morfolojik ve semantik özelliklerin esas alındığı bu inceleme bölümü kendi içinde dört bölüme ayrılmaktadır. Birinci bölümde yapı ve anlam bakımından paralel olan fiiller; ikinci bölümde yapı bakımından paralel, anlam bakımından farklılık gösteren fiiller; üçüncü bölümde Kazan Tatar Türkçesinde karşılığı olmayan fiiller ve dördüncü bölümde morfolojik tahlili belirsiz olan fiiller incelenmiştir.Sonuç bölümünde, Et-Tuhfetü'z-Zekiyye Fi'l-Lu?ati't-Türkiyye'de Kıpçak grubu özellikleri gösteren fiiller değerlendirilmiş, eserin kendisine has özellikleri ve eserin meçhul müellifi üzerinde durulmuş ve eser ile Kazan Tatar Türkçesi arasında paralel ve farklı özellikler verilmiştir.

In this thesis, the lexicon (verb) of Et-Tuhfetü?z-Zekiyye Fi?l-Lu?ati?t-Türkiyye, which is one of the monuments of Mameluke-Kipchak era, has been compared in diachronic way with (Kazan) Tatar Language which is one of the contemporary Kipchak Languages. The thesis, basically, does consist of introduction, examination and the conclusion parts. In the introduction part, the language of monuments having been written in Mameluke area and (Kazan) Tatar Language are delineated, furthermore dictionary-grammars which were written in Mameluke area are introduced.In the examination part, the verbs detected in the monument have been compared with their equivalents in Tatar Language. The Part of examination which is based on morphological and semantical basics is divided into four parts. In the first section of it, similar verbs according to morphology and semantics; the second, verbs which are similar according to morphology but different according to semantics; the third, verbs which do not have equivalents in Tatar Language; the fourth, verbs which have not been analysed as morphologically, have been examined.In the conclusion part, the verbs indicating Kipchak features have been considered, some features which are peculiar to the monument and some ideas about the unknown author of it have been emphasized. Furthermore, similar and different points between the monument and Kazan Tatar Language have been presented.

Öz: Türklerin sosyal, kültürel ve gündelik hayatlarından tutun da halk bilimi çalışmaları ile Türk tarihi ve Türk diline dair yapılacak çalışmalara kadar katkı sağlayacak konulardan biri de Türkçenin tarihî metinlerinde çoklukla dağınık bir vaziyette tespit edebildiğimiz antroponimlerin (kişi adlarının) belirlenmesidir. Antroponimler (kişi adları) her kültürde ve kültürün taşıyıcısı olan dilde, o kültürü yaşayan ve onun dilini konuşan, anlayan ve onunla iletişim kuran insanlar için çok önemlidir. Aslında toplum içinde kişilere verilen adlar onların hem kendilerini tanıtması hem de tanınmaları için birer tanımlayıcı görevi görürler. Bu çalışmada eski Türk kişi adlarıyla ilgili söz varlığının Memlûk-Kıpçak sahasına ait olanları alanın sözlük ve gramer kitaplarından hareketle bir araya getirilip incelenmiştir. Bu eserlerde yer alan kişi adları semantik bir sınıflandırmaya tâbi tutularak yapı bilgisi, Türk ad verme geleneği ve tarihî kişi adları bakımından değerlendirilmeye çalışılmıştır. One of the issues that will contribute to the studies which will be done about Turkish history and Turkish language is to define anthroponomy (personal name) which we can identify dispersedly in Turkish historical texts. Anthroponomys are so important in each culture and in the language that carrier of this culture and also so important for the people living in this culture and speaking this culture's language, understanding and communicating via it. Actually the names given to the persons in the society perform a duty for both to introduce these people and to identify themselves. In this study, the vocabulary related to the early Turkish individual's names which belong to Mamluk-Kipchak field were gathered together and studied with reference to the field's dictionaries and grammar books. The individual's names that take place in these studies were tried to be evaluated by putting to semantics classification morphology, Turkish name giving tradition and historical individual names.

Ranks are one of the most characteristic patterns of art, architecture, and history of the Mamlūks. Their use was overall the Mamlūk State in Egypt and Syria (1250-1517), on almost all kinds of coins, art and architecture. Mamlūk ranks mirrored the core of the Mamlūk culture; their origin and life contextual. Furthermore ranks came as a new advertising approach, colorful, and symbolized visual tool, with a relatively high advantage compared to the traditional method at that time i.e. the inscriptions. The subject of this paper is based on a new view of the reasons beyond inventing and using the ranks by the Mamlūks. It examines in details its historical context and its extraordinary functional use considering the primary sources and literature. This paper also suggests the visual impact as a new factor in studying the Mamlūk ranks. It also discusses the cross-cultural context between the Islamic ranks and Byzantine and European heraldry.

İnsan sağlığı ilgili sözcükler bir dilin temel söz varlığı içinde yer alan ve kullanım sıklığı çok olan sözcüklerdir. Vücuttaki eksiklikler ve kusurları ifade eden sözcükler de bu söz varlığının bir parçasıdır. Beş duyu organımızdan biri olan gözle ilgili dilimizde çok zengin bir kavram alanı yaratılmıştır. Göz ile ilgili kullanılan bu zengin kavram alanı, Türk dilinin Eski Türkçe döneminden itibaren yazılı kaynaklarda tanıklanmaktadır. Bu yazı kapsamında, Memlûk-Kıpçak Türkçesinin zengin söz varlığı içinde tespit ettiğimiz göz kusurları ile ilgili sözcükler tarihi-karşılaştırmalı yöntemle incelenecek ve ilgili sözcüklerin Modern Kıpçak lehçelerinden biri olan Kazakçadaki durumu değerlendirilecektir. Böylelikle Memlûk-Kıpçak söz varlığında tespit edilen göz kusurları ile ilgili terimlerin Kazakçadaki yansımalarını belirlemekle birlikte Kazakçada ne ölçüde korunduğunu ve ne gibi değişimlere uğradığını ortaya koymak amaçlanmıştır.

This article will discuss the situation of the Cuman / Kipchak Turks in the Balkans before the Ottoman Empire. Before moving on to our main subject, it will give information about the origin of the Cumans, their emergence, and the names of these Turkish people by various nations. After this preliminary information, the article will focus on the situation of the Cumans in the Balkans before the Ottoman Empire and will discuss the relations of the Cumans with different nations such as Hungarians, Romanians and Bulgarians for a better understanding.

Makalede Osmanlı öncesi Balkanlar’da Kuman/Kıpçak Türkleri’nin durumu ele alınacaktır. Asıl konumuza geçmeden önce Kumanların tanınması amacıyla onların menşei, ortaya çıkışları ve bu Türk kavminin çeşitli milletler tarafından hangi isimlerle anıldıkları hakkında bilgi verilecektir. Bu ön bilgiden sonra Kumanlar’ın Osmanlı öncesinde Balkanlardaki durumu üzerinde durulacak ve bunun daha iyi anlaşılması için Kuman-Macar, Kuman-Romen ve Kuman-Bulgar ilişkileri tek tek ele alınarak konumuz işlenecektir.

This paper attempts to work out some principles of the establishment of those Old Kipchak words which are distinctive from other Old Turkic languages. Old Kipchak is a language that was spoken in two periods, one Early Old Kipchak from the late-8th century when it first appeared to the mid-11th century, the other Late Old Kipchak from the second half of the 11th century to the Mongol invasion in the 1230s.

By tracing Qipchaq’s eventful career, the article explores the roles ethnicity, religious affiliation, and social-cultural solidarity, played across the Mongol-Mamluk frontier, especially in creating divided loyalties among Mongol commanders and defectors, on both sides of the border.

Sondan eklemeli bir dil olan Türkçede fiilimsiler, anlam ve dizim bakımından bü-yük bir önem taşımaktadır. Bu tür ekler Türkçeye akıcılık kazandırmaktadır. Söz konusu eklerin bir kısmı Eski Türkçeden beri aynı işlevi yapagelmiştir. Bir kısmı da ya asıl işlevini kaybedip yeni bir işlev üstlenmiş, ya da asıl işlevi kaybetmeden yeni bir işlev kazanmıştır. Türkçede en sık kullanılagelen sıfat-fiil eklerinden biri olan -dUK eki geçmiş zaman anlamını bildirmektedir. Türkçenin tarihî ve bazı çağdaş lehçelerinde işlek olan bu ek, geçmiş zaman sıfat-fiil ekinin işlevi dışında bazı işlevler üstlenmektedir. Bu çalışmada Türkçenin tarihî dönemlerinden biri olan Memluk Kıpçak Türkçesi sahasında -dUK ekinin kullanılışı üzerine durula-caktır. Ekin sıfat-fiil ekinin işlevi yanında hangi işlevlerde kullanıldığı tespit edile-rek örneklerle gösterilecektir.

В 2013 году вышла монография Р.П. Храпачевского «Половцы-куны в Волго-Уральском междуречье (по данным китайских источников)». В рецензии отмечены все недостатки и достоинства работы. Единственными двумя выигрышными моментами в рецензируемой работе являются: полный перевод жизнеописания Тутука на русский язык и более расширенная аргументация тезиса о правильном прочтении имени далекого предка Тутука (Цюй-нянь «Кунан», а не Цюй-чу). В остальном же, рецензируемая работа содержит большое количество ошибок, которые сводят на нет те выигрышные моменты, отмеченные нами выше. Стоит отметить, что в плане историографии Храпачевский Р.П. не учитывает и не использует множество работ по кипчакам, можно назвать работы Ахинжанова С.М., Пелльо П. и многих других. Также перспективной точкой зрения является гипотеза о том, что Хунань (глава племени Цзубу) идентичен Кунану (предок Тутука). Гипотеза Р.П. Храпачевского о том, что это два разных человека не аргументирована. Он в своей монографии выдвинул следующие тезисы: настоящее имя предка Тутука не Цюй-чу (Кучук), а Цюй-нянь (Кун-йан в интерпретации Храпачевского Р.П.). Кунйан переводится как «образец (пример) кунов». Кунйан был предводителем племени кунов, а род Тутука (потомок Кунйана) назывался кун. Инасы, внук Кунйана родился около 1115-1120 годов и умер между 1208 и 1217 годами, а Кунйан родился в середине XI века, и возглавил миграции кунов. Орда Инасы впервые столкнулась с монголами в 1208-1210 годах из-за бегства к ним меркита Худу. Часть орды Инасы («кунов») подчинилась монголам после смерти Инасы. Часть кипчаков-кунов, из бывшей орды Инасы-хана бежала на Южный Урал, где стала предками башкир суун-кипчаков, так как башкирское произношение суун-кипчак является хъыун-кипчак (хъыун похоже на кун). Тезисы, выдвинутые Храпачевским Р.П., противоречат данным первоисточников и гипотезам других авторам, изучавших кипчаков. Судя по данным Юань Ши и Насави, племя из которого происходил Кунан называлось байаут.

Öz Sa'dî'nin en meĢhur iki eserinden biri olan Gülistān, yazıldığı dönemden itibaren birçok dile çevrilmiĢtir. Ancak özellikle Türk edebiyatında bu eserin büyük bir ilgiyle okunduğu görülür. Memlük Kıpçak Türkçesinin en önemli metinlerinden biri olarak kabul edilen Kitabu Gülistān bi't-Türkî, gerek döneminin ses ve biçim bilgisi özelliklerini taĢıması gerekse içerdiği deyimler ve atasözleri konusunda ön plana çıkan bir eserdir. Yapısal olarak daha çok mensur bir metin olarak dikkat çeken Gülistān, araya serpiĢtirilen özlü sözler, meseller ve Ģiir parçalarından oluĢmaktadır. Bu yazıda, eserde geçen deyimler konularına göre tasnif edilerek otuz üç baĢlık altında ele alınmıĢtır. Abstract One of Sa'dî's two most famous works, Gülistān, has been translated into many languages since its writing. However, it is seen that this work is read with great interest especially in Turkish literature. Kitābu Gülistan bi't-Türkî, which is considered as one of the most important texts of Mameluk Kipchak Turkish, is a work that comes to the forefront in terms of idioms and proverbs if it carries the characteristics of phonetics and morphology of the own period. Gülistān, written as a prose, consists of parts of words, poems and poems. In this article, the idioms used in the work were classified according to subjects and handled under thirty-three headings.

Arap dilinde yazılan filolojik risaleler, Türk edebî dillerinin oluşum sürecini incelemek ve onları tarihî-karşılaştırmalı olarak aydınlatmak bakımından önem arz eden kaynaklardan olmalarına rağmen hâlâ gereken ölçüde incelenmemiş, leksik açıdan sağlam bir analize tabi tutulmamıştır.

Since Old Kipchak possesses very few works, Turkic works of Mamluk era have always been examined within the scope of Kipchak language. These works, however, also include indisputably large Oghuz vocabulary as much as Kipchak one. One of these works is a glossary, which has no own manuscript, but is written down on the margins of  Kitāb al‐Idrāk li lisan al‐Atrāk. The margin glosses of Kitāb al‐Idrāk has such a vocabulary  that  only half of it can be found in other Mamluk‐Kipchak works. This original part of the margin glosses seems to have to do with Anatolian Turkish with respect to their phonological character as well as containing many loanwords from Greek and Armenian. This paper compares the original part of margin glosses of Kitāb al‐Idrāk with Anatolian Turkish in three substrata (Old Anatolian Turkish XIII‐XIX. cc.; Anatolian Turkish dialects; standard Turkish) and lists the words matched. This matching also sheds light on Oghuzification of Mamluk‐Kipchak language.

Аннотация: В статье рассматриваются выходцы из Центральной Азии, переселившиеся на Ближний Восток и в Северную Африку после монгольского нашествия, влияние
хорезмийцев на общественно-политическую жизнь региона, роль мамлюкского государства в становлении и развитии, а также анализ этих вопросов в арабских источниках.

Armenians, were able to establish a state on their behalf in consequence of the Crusades and do not miss the great historical opportunity, in Cilicia (Çukurova). Armenian Kingdom of Cilicia in the vicinity of Cukurova have been fed with the support of the Crusader States and Cyprus, and especially after being subjected to the Il-Khans in their regions had reached a certain strength. However, the Armenians, they apply their attacks and with trade embargoes, they were made themselves the target of the Mamluk State. By the capacity of a single state to stop the Mongols in the region, proved the power of the Mamluks, and it was not possible to remain silent this situation. From 1260, the Armenian capital, Sis, reduced date that until 1375 the period of time, as a result of political,struggle, almost continuous-time war between Mamluks and the Armenians, Mamluk had been the empire continue to existing  side, In this study, 115 years of laying down the Mamluk-Armenian relations, will be presented with detailed information about the subject.

Throughout the history, political marriages have been arranged to strengthen the alliances and friendships between the states. By this way, in the time of the Bahriyya Mamluks, the sultans of the Mamluk State implemented such political marriages. The political marriages of the Mamluks to the Mongolians were carried out with the elites of the Golden Hords and the Ilkhanids.
The political marriages of the Mamluks and the Mongolians, were of two types: the first type includes the political marriages between the states (that was, political marriages with the female members of the Khan's dynasty); and the other contains the political marriages with the females of the Wafidiyah, the Mongolian commanders taking refuge in the Mamluks. The first type of marriages allegedly consisting of the marriage-based alliances with the Golden Horde has two examples. One of the marriage alliances is the marriage between the Sultan Baybars and the daughter of Sultan Berke Khan whose name is not mentioned in the sources. It is doubtful that this person is the Sultan Berke’s daughter. The other marriage is certainly between the Sultan en-Nasır Muhammed and Tulunbiye Khatun, of Chingiz Khan’s dynasty. The number of marriages in the above-mentioned second type is higher than those in the first one. The Sultan Baybars married several daughters of the wafadiyah and the Sultan Qalawun got married to Aslun Khatun. Besides of these, the sons of Qalawuns Ali, Halil and Muhammed, got also married to Mengubek and Ertekin. This study thus provides detailed information about these marriages and women’s role in political life.

The statistical analysis is based on binary time series (1 = presence of an event in that year, 0 = absence) for plague epidemics in the entire of the Mediterranean and the Near East for the 6th to 8th century and for the Aegean region and Egypt for the period 1347-1500.
Mean waiting times between years with events were calculated on the basis of an expectation test for a poisson process for simple columns of event times for the five phenomena.
Probabilities of transition between years with events and years without were calculated with the help of Markov chain analysis on the basis of the above-mentioned time series.
The entire project is work in progress and includes also similar analyses for other medieval polities during this period (until now China, Egypt, England and Hungary; cf. also J. The foreign policy of the Mamluk State in the early Bahri period belongs to the number of in details discussed issues in the Mamluk historiography. In general, we may suggest that it is one of the best studied aspects of the Mamluk State political development.
The present paper is based mainly on the statistical analysis of the events, related to the foreign policy and covered by the chronicle ‘Zubda(t) al-Fikra(t) fīTa’rīkh al-Hijra(t)’.
The discussed period witnessed an absence of any established system of regional international relations, the foreign policy of the Mamluk state in many aspects had a reactive nature as a response to the danger from the Tatars (mainly, from the Ilkhanate).
The Crusader states in the Middle East and the Ilkhanate were perceived by the Mamluks as parts of the one danger, regardless the real relations which de-facto existed between these polities.
The concept of the narrative of the foreign policy applied by the author of the ‘Zubda(t) al-Fikra(t)…’ remains within the general frames of the Mamluk elite’s perception on the nature of the historic process. The emphasis made on the foreign policy activities of al-Zahir Baibars serves as a kind of the beginning of a new cycle, which will reach its peak during the reign of al-Nasir Muhammad.
