In questo saggio viene approfondito il percorso di ricerca sulla semantica della felicità nell’opera leopardiana, i cui primi risultati sono apparsi in un precedente articolo (cfr. “Otto/Nove- cento”, n. 2/2017). Attraverso un metodo d’indagine di natura lessicografica si intende analizzare qui ulteriori reti concettuali legate al termine “felicità”, al fine di offrire un quadro più completo su una questione complessa ed estesa nel pensiero dell’autore. I risultati del lavoro investono principalmente tre macro-aree tematiche: il legame tra la felicità e il pensiero scientifico; il rapporto che l’autore istituisce tra il valore della felicità e le strutture sociali; il ruolo di alcuni principi matematici e artistici, in particolar modo la prospettiva, nella riconfigurazione della felicità proposta da Leopardi.

Attraverso un metodo d’indagine di natura lessicografica, il saggio mira a ricostruire le reti concettuali di un tema centrale quanto problematico nel sistema filosofico di Leopardi: la semantica della felicità. La questione della felicità coinvolge innumerevoli ambiti del sapere, apparentemente distanti tra loro, dalle scienze alla politica. Analizzandone la molteplicità delle implicazioni tematiche, mira ad esporre la profonda stratificazione del pensiero leopardiano sull’argomento, sia nel rapporto con le sue fonti, antiche e moderne, sia nella sua elaborazione di una prospettiva del tutto originale. Il lavoro presenta la prima parte dei risultati emersi dall’indagine, che si focalizzano soprattutto sul legame con la tradizione aristotelica e sulla funzione della felicità in rapporto allo stile e alla composizione poetica.

A collaborative learning approach has been identified to lessen anxiety and allow more comprehensible inputs to be processed cognitively to result in meaningful outputs. This study specifically examines the effectiveness of the collaborative learning approach and its best fit model supplemented with several techniques to improve students’ mastery of the mental lexicon of the word association. This Classroom Action Research involved 60 college students in their senior years in Institut Teknologi Kalimantan. The data collection involved two cycles in which each cycle employed planning, implementation, analysing learning activities and learning outcome and finally reflection. This paper introduces a lexical resource, ARLEX, for Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) that explicitly lists ambiguity at the lexical and syntactic levels for each token. Arabic orthography is known for being underspecified for short vowels and other markers such as letter doubling and glottal stops, known as diacritics. This leads to further ambiguity in orthography with real impact on natural language processing (NLP) applications, not to mention readability and human language processing. We specifically target listing alternative ambiguous forms of words within and across the same part of speech (POS), namely where tokens with no specified diacritics may have multiple possible diacritized alternatives. The entries in this dictionary are constrained to five POS tags: verbs, nouns, adjectives, adverbs, and prepositions. A morphological analyzer and disambiguator is leveraged to generate the desired linguistic properties. The resulting inventory, ARLEX, is a large scale comprehensive resource of words, recording their degree of ambiguity at various levels with example usages. ARLEX could be most useful for NLP applications, pedagogical applications, as well as socio-and psycho-linguistic studies.

Saramaccan, a maroon creole of Suriname, shows evidence of having a split lexicon where the majority of its words are marked for pitch accent but an important minority are marked for tone. The basic origins of this split would appear to be clear: pitch-accented words represent transfer of a European-like accent system, while tonal words represent transfer of an African-like tone system. If this is the right account, its apparent simplicity raises an important question: Why didn’t it happen more often? While a definitive answer cannot yet be given, it is suggested that a likely explanation is that the split lexicon was not a product of creolization but, rather, the result of a restricted kind of language mixing, which took place after marronage, and that this mixing was employed as a means of establishing a distinct speech variety for the nascent Saramaccan community.

Sentiment mining from the textual content on the web can give valuable insights for discernment, strategic decision making, targeted advertisement, and much more. Supervised machine learning (ML) approaches do not capture the sentiment inherent in the individual terms. Whereas the unsupervised sentiment lexicon (SL) based approaches lag behind ML approaches because of a bias they have towards one sentiment than the other. In this paper, we propose a hybrid approach that uses unsupervised sentiment lexicons to transform the term space into a twodimensional sentiment space on which a discriminative classifier is trained in a supervised fashion. This hybrid approach yields higher accuracy, faster training, and lower memory footprint than the ML approaches. It is more suitable for scenarios where training data is scarce. We support our claim by reporting results on six social media datasets using five sentiment lexicons and four ML algorithms.

Many studies show that unsafe behavior is the main cause of construction accidents. Safety education and training are effective means to minimise people's unsafe behaviors. Apart from traditional face-to-face construction knowledge sharing, social media is a good tool because it is convenient, efficient, and widely used. We applied both social network analysis and sentiment analysis to investigate knowledge sharing on Twitter. Our study is a novel attempt to understand social structure of "construction safety"-related twitter networks and the opinion leaders. We selected and analyzed 6561 tweets of three users' networks on Twitter-"construction safety", "construction health" and "construction accident". We found that three networks had low density and many isolated vertices, which showed that users did not actively interact with each other. The opinion leaders in this study were mostly organizations or government agencies. The top one is "cif_ireland", the Irish construction industry's representative body, the Construction Industry Federation. 3200 Tweets of the top opinion leader were analyzed through graph metrics calculation, cluster analysis, sentiment analysis, and correlation analysis. The opinion leader used Twitter as a medium to disseminate the latest safety news. Thus, we may use Twitter to stimulate people's interest on construction safety topics, share construction safety knowledge, opinions and ideas. Besides, our results showed that sentiment valence had no correlation with number of favorites or retweets. Nevertheless, there was a positive correlation between favorites and retweets.

The interest in lexical resources is evolving continuously as a result of different needs and technologies. The Lexicon is central to research in various domains : lexicography, vocabulary learning, reading tools, etc. By and large, it is also the basis for natural language processing tools and language technologies in general. Building and enriching lexical resources remains a costly and time-consuming task that requires competencies in different disciplines. This article deals with the history and word formation of the Icelandic word for ‘police’, i.e. lögregla. The word constitutes an interesting case of word formation in that said lexeme is a dvandva compound whose creation is related to the expression að halda uppi lögum og reglu ‘to maintain law and order’. Moreover, it is argued that the word has arisen in the wake of the Icelandic purist movement in the first half of the 19th century, and that its creator is Konráð Gíslason, who was at the time a
member of the Icelandic Literary Society (Hið íslenzka bókmenntafélag) and editor of the journal Fjölnir. According to the sources, the word, lögregla, cannot have been formed as an independent lexical item. In fact, the word appears first in a compound with maður ‘man’, meaning ‘policeman’ or, more precisely, ‘a man who is in charge of maintaining
law and order’. It is argued that lögregla has in fact been created in order to gradually substitute the Danish loanword pólití, first in compounds such as pólitímaður and pólitíþjónn ‘policeman’, and then as a single lexeme. The Danish loanword pólití had a twofold meaning: ‘policeman’ and ‘police’. Moreover, it is argued that lögregla, as an unbound lexeme, was initially a shortened form for lögreglumaður, and later assumed
the general meaning ‘police force’ by means of synecdoche (pars pro toto).

Псковский областной словарь с историческими данными – словарь полного типа: в нем представлены все бытующие в крестьянской речи общерусские и диалектные слова. Это также первый исторический словарь народных говоров. В нем используются данные из средневековых памятников письменности и документов XIV–XVIII вв. Псковской земли.

Словарь адресован лингвистам разных специальностей, историкам, этнографам, фольклористам, специалистам-филологам и всем, кто серьезно изучает русский язык.

Словарь псковских народных говоров составляется коллективом преподавателей, аспирантов, студентов филологического факультета Ленинградского/Санкт-Петербургского государственного университета на основе богатой картотеки (более 1 000 000 карточек). Эта ценнейшая картотека собрана на протяжении последних 40 лет во время ежегодных диалектологических экспедиций в Псковскую область. По объему "Псковский областной словарь с историческими данными" почти равен четырехтомному "Толковому словарю живого великорусского языка" В.И. Даля.

Народная речь Псковской области представляет большой интерес в международном плане, не говоря уже о ее исключительном значении для историков и диалектологов русского языка, так как она отражает тысячелетние связи и культурный обмен русского населения с тесно примыкающими народами прибалтийско-финской группы, с латышами и литовцами, а также и белорусами.

Большим преимуществом перед всеми имеющимися областными словарями русского языка (как и других славянских языков) будет наличие в  Словаре большого исторического материала. Кроме Новгорода, ни один край ("удел") феодальной эпохи не сохранил такого обилия торговой, юридической, политической документации, такой богатой местной литературы; достаточно напомнить о выдающихся своим местным колоритом Псковских летописях. Это дало нам возможность впервые в русской лексикографии поставить в непосредственную связь лексику современных псковских говоров с отражениями живой народной речи в документах и памятниках письменности феодальной эпохи. Региональный словарь на широком историческом фоне - принципиально новое дело в мировом языкознании.

The article deals with mnemonic techniques that are used in foreign (English) language. Also, a brief review of foreign vocabulary with the algorithm of mastering through mnemonics is presented, which is illustrated by visual examples with the translation. In addition, we consider the principle of the human nervous system, based on which almost every individual is capable of mastering mnemonic techniques in a varying degree. Thanks to a brief historical reference, the prerequisites for the emergence of mnemonics are presented. Next part of the article deals with the positive and negative aspects of mnemonical techniques, which are based on the opinions of experts in the field of language, translation studies and pedagogy; the results of our practical implementation the mnemonic technique in the training process are demonstrated. The concluding part of the work is the formulation of our personal opinion on mnemonics, its main characteristics and expediency.

Russian-Czech cultural and language contacts have a very long tradition, but  the  really  intensive  contacts  between  both  nations  and  languages  are  noticeable since the end of 18th century. In this period the Czech scholars like J. Dobrovský or A. J. Puchmayer started their studies of Russian language, and other Czech patriots (e.g. J. Jungmann) began to translate the ambitious European literature into Czech, using a lot of loanwords taken from Polish and Russian. The Russian-Czech language contacts reached their first acme in 1820s and 1830s when the Czech patriots of J. Jungmann’s circle borrowed hundreds of  words  from  Russian  (e.g.  průmysl “industry”, příroda “nature”, vzduch “air”)  that  occured  in  Jungmann’s  impressive  Czech-German  Vocabulary published  in  five  volumes  between  1835  and  1839.  Russian  loanwords  (including  the  words  that  Russian  language  itself  borrowed  from  another  languages, especially from Turko-Tatar and Finno-Ugric languages and also from French and German) were utilized in the Czech language mainly as the scientific terms (babočka “peacock butterfly”, nářečí “dialect”, záliv “bay”) or as the poetisms (děva “girl”, chrabrý “valiant”, jeseň “autumn”) and many of  them  successively  spread  into  the  common  language  (ohromný „huge“, lyže “ski”, ženština “lady of easy virtues”). Sometimes it is not effortless to decide whether a certain loanword is borrowed from Russian or from Polish (e.g. pyl “pollen”, rosomák “wolverine”)  because  surely  more  loanwords  came  from  Polish  into  the  Czech  language  than  from  Russian.  Moreover,  some  Russian  loanwords  in  the  contemporary  Czech  language  have  their  exact (and later extinct) counterparts in the Old Czech (řešit “to solve” and others).  Our  analysis  of  Russian  loanwords  in  Czech  is  also  complicated  by the fact that many Russian words were very arbitrarily adaptated in the Czech language both in formal and semantic respects. The second acme of Russian-Czech language contacts came during the World  War  I  (from  1914  to  1918)  and  during  the  Russian  Civil  War  (after  1918)  when  about  100  000  Czechs  and  Slovaks  who  were  fighting  in  the  Czechoslovak  Legion  (originally  established  within  the  Imperial  Russian  Army) were in very close relations with the Anti-Bolshevik Russian troops and with civilians in Russia, and thus with the Russian culture and language. Through the mediation of members of the Czechoslovak Legion, that were celebrated  social  class  in  the  Masaryk’s  Czechoslovakia  between  1918  and  1939,  many  Russian  loanwords  spread  foremost  in  the  Czech  military  terminology (e.g. nálet “air strike”, protivník “adversary”, prověrka “test”).The third acme of the Russian-Czech language contacts was reached in the period of building and maintaining of  socalism in Czechoslovakia after 1948  when  the  Russian  language  was  the  first  and  often  the  only  foreign  language  taught  in  the  Czech  schools.  The  Russian  was  also  the  original  language of texts that were predominantly translated into Czech in this period. Not only Russian loanwords like bezpartijní “non-party person”, dokladovat “give evidence of something”, úderník “hardly productive worker” occured in Czech after 1948, but also some word-formation models were borrowed from Russian to Czech (e.g. compound adjectives like hospodářskopolitický “economic-political”, palivoenergetický “fuel-energetical”, veřejnosprávní “public-administrative” or abbreviated names like Druchema < Družstvo pro chemickou  výrobu  „Corporation  for  Chemical  Industry“.  Russian  was  to  a  lesser extent the inspiration for some new Czech syntactic constructions and it contributed to the temporarily higher productivity of adnominal genitives like ulice  Lenina “Lenin  street”  (instead  of  Leninova  ulice  with  possesive  adjective that is more typical in Czech).

Current tendencies in the Czech journalistic style. The author compares the frequency lists taken from three subcorpora of the Czech National Corpus (SYN2000, SYN2005, SYN2015). These style-balanced subcorpora contain texts from three time periods (1990–1999, 2000–2004, 2010–2014) and therefore allow to deduce some conclusions about changes within the Czech functional styles. They may
also show current tendencies in the Czech vocabulary, as well as the tendencies in the inventory and distribution of conjunctions. The author realizes that relations among four basic functional styles (journalistic, fi ctional, scientific and administrative) are rather stable in the last three decades. Regarding the vocabulary richness and the measure of stereotypicality, the Czech journalistic style is still closer to both the scientifi c and administrative style than to the beletristic style.  Substantial changes were observed in the inventory of the most frequent
lemmas used in the journalistic texts (in accordance with symptomatic themes of certain epoch): while the lemmas like dotace ‘subsidy’, kariéra ‘career’, kuchyně ‘cuisine’ as well as ‘kitchen’, technologie ‘technology’, bát se ‘to be afraid’ or bavit (se) ‘to amuse’ or ‘to have a fun’ are more frequent today (when compared to the period thirty years ago), symptomatic lemmas like demokracie ‘democracy’, investor ‘investor’, průmysl ‘industry’, voják ‘soldier’, podílet se ‘to participate’ or zahájit
‘to start’, ‘to open’ are less frequent today. The analysis of the inventory and distribution of cojunctions in Czech also brought some facts: the frequency of paratactic conjunctions (e.g. nebo ‘or’, ale ‘but’, což ‘which’) rises in the journalistic texts and there are even some very progressive conjunctions that were not frequent in the written texts before (jenže ‘except that’, jestli ‘if’, takže ‘thus’), whereas the frequency of hypotactic conjunctions (e.g. aby ‘in order to’, který ‘who’ or ‘that’, že ‘that’) slightly descends.

Acquisition of the lexicon of insult in L2. The acquisition of the lexicon of the insult is mainly carried out during interaction in real contexts with people for whom L2 is L1, through transfer of L1 and occasionally in formal educational contexts. In this text we present how the forms of acquisition influence the learning process of the lexicon of the insult. For this we will take three groups of study subjects, two of Polish university students, and Spanish university students (control group). The results show what differences appear in these groups with respect to the gradation of insults or the perception of insults linked to different aspects such as intellectual capacity and sexuality.

Sentiment analysis (SA) is one of the fields in which "big data" need to be processed. The term "sentiment" refers to the feelings, beliefs, emotions, and opinions that people express on certain matters in written form, usually in online media such as social networks. Sentiment analysis can provide enterprises with valuable insights into, for example, what customers think about their products. When sentiments are collected from social networks over some period of time, the amount of data can indeed be "big". This paper describes and evaluates a lexiconbased SA solution, implemented as a prototype using SAP HANA. Sentiments are collected from Facebook and Google+, using a combination of tools including Microsoft Excel and the Power Query addon to Excel. Since HANA employs in-memory database technology, the calculation of sentiment values is very fast. As a result of the sentiment analysis, five categories (from strong negative to strong positive), plus a category "sentiment not found", are filled with individual sentiments and evaluated with the help of business intelligence tools. SA results are made available on a user interface created with SAP's current interface technology, SAPUI5.

Volume IX offers a valuable enhancement of the 8-volume Dictionary of Classical Hebrew (1993–2011).

In DCH I–VIII, each volume had its own English–Hebrew Index, but this volume presents a much improved gathering together of all those indexes. The Index here contains every word used as a translation (gloss) in the Dictionary, that is, all the words printed in bold. In addition—a feature not seen before in Hebrew dictionaries—beneath each listed word are noted all the Hebrew words it translates, together with the volume and page reference of the relevant article.

The second element in this volume is the Word Frequency Table. This is a combination of the Word Frequency Tables in the various volumes of DCH. There, the lists of word frequencies were arranged under each letter of the alphabet. In the present publication, all the words in the Dictionary are combined in a single list arranged in order of frequency of occurrence.

Unlike all previous lists of occurrences of Hebrew words, the present list includes the occurrences not only in the Hebrew Bible but also in the whole scope of The Dictionary of Classical Hebrew, which is to say, Sirach (Ecclesiasticus), the Dead Sea Scrolls and the Hebrew Inscriptions as well as the Hebrew Bible itself.

Gerov's principal work is considered his unique Dictionary of the Bulgarian Language (Речникъ на блъгарскый языкъ). For about fifty years, he collected, from ordinary people, a great number of words, expressions, proverbs, folk songs, and proper nouns. The first three letters were already published in 1855–1856 in Russia, but the dictionary as a whole was published in five volumes, from 1895 to 1904, with an appendix added in 1908 by Gerov's collaborator T.Panchev. The dictionary contains about 100 000 entries (if the appendix is included). It is considered an extremely valuable source for the study of the Bulgarian language of the XIX century.

Se trata de una reimpresión que mejoró la primera impresión del diccionario académico, publicada en agosto de 1780, y que contiene numerosas modificaciones que pasarían poco después, en 1783, a la segunda edición del diccionario vulgar.

England’s Victorian period is marked as an era of historical, technological, economic, and social change. Although science and technological advancement was very progressive—denoted by the Industrial Revolution which took place in this era—the Victorian society’s ideal of moral values, norms, and beliefs was very conservative. Robert Louis Stevenson, a famous Victorian author, wrote The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde which portrays the complexity of Victorian upper class lives in dealing with the development of science yet facing the strict social norms. This research applies a sociological approach to examine the significant relations between the characterization of the three main characters in the novel—Jekyll, Hyde, and Utterson—and the social issues in the Victorian era. A library research as well as a qualitative method is applied in the process of collecting and analyzing the data. It was found that both Henry Jekyll and Edward Hyde symbolize the repressed individuals...

Com o objetivo de divulgar resultados de pesquisas desenvolvidas no âmbito das universidades brasileiras sobre o desenvolvimento da competência lexical, vem a lume mais um livro a consolidar, nesta oportunidade, a coleção O léxico do português em estudo na sala de aula, com o seu segundo volume. Embora tal coleção não tenha sido concebida quando da publicação do volume anterior, optou-se agora por tornar O léxico do português em estudo na sala de aula uma publicação regular, com a informação quanto ao volume a partir deste segundo livro da coleção, procedimento a ser seguido nas publicações subsequentes da obra.
A organização deste volume II mantém o mesmo objetivo do anterior, qual seja o de reunir trabalhos que, tomando o léxico como eixo central sob análise, contribuam para o aclaramento, com o aporte teórico da lexicologia ou da lexicografia, de importantes questões sobre a palavra em uso e, principalmente, para o ensino do léxico, uma vez que em todos os capítulos sobressai a preocupação com os aspectos pedagógicos no tratamento do tema abordado.
