Extractive speech summarization, which purports to select an indicative set of sentences from a spoken document so as to succinctly represent the most important aspects of the document, has garnered much research over the years. In this paper, we cast extractive speech summarization as an ad-hoc information retrieval (IR) problem and investigate various language modeling (LM) methods for important sentence selection. The main contributions of this paper are four-fold. First, we explore a novel sentence modeling paradigm built on top of the notion of relevance, where the relationship between a candidate summary sentence and a spoken document to be summarized is discovered through different granularities of context for relevance modeling. Second, not only lexical but also topical cues inherent in the spoken document are exploited for sentence modeling. Third, we propose a novel clarity measure for use in important sentence selection, which can help quantify the thematic specificity of each individual sentence that is deemed to be a crucial indicator orthogonal to the relevance measure provided by the LM-based methods. Fourth, in an attempt to lessen summarization performance degradation caused by imperfect speech recognition, we investigate making use of different levels of index features for LM-based sentence modeling, including words, subword-level units, and their combination. Experiments on broadcast news summarization seem to demonstrate the performance merits of our methods when compared to several existing well-developed and/or state-of-the-art methods.

Artificial intelligence (AI) techniques are becoming useful as alternate approaches to conventional techniques or as components of integrated systems. They have been used to solve complicated practical problems in various areas and are becoming more and more popular nowadays. AItechniques have the following features: can learn from examples; are fault tolerant in the sense that they are able to handle noisy and incomplete data; are able to deal with non-linear problems; and once trained can perform prediction and generalization at high speed. AI-based systems are being developed and deployed worldwide in a myriad of applications, mainly because of their symbolic reasoning, flexibility and explanation capabilities. AI have been used and applied in different sectors, such as engineering, economics, medicine, military, marine, etc. They have also been applied for modeling, identification, optimization, prediction, forecasting, and control of complex systems. The main objective of this paper is to present an overview of the AI-techniques for sizing photovoltaic (PV) systems: stand-alone PVs, grid-connected PV systems, PV-wind hybrid systems, etc. Published literature presented in this paper show the potential of AI as a design tool for the optimal sizing of PV systems. Additionally, the advantage of using an AI-based sizing of PV systems is that it provides good optimization, especially in isolated areas, where the weather data are not always available. #

Metallothioneins (MTs) are cysteine-rich proteins that assist in cellular homeostasis and protect against oxidant injury. MTs can be induced by heavy metals and inflammatory mediators and function as free radical scavengers, reservoirs for essential heavy metals, and immunomodulators. In light of MTs' roles in responses to stress, we evaluated the in vivo effects of MT gene dose on the course of Listeria monocytogenes (LM) infection. LM burden was measured in livers and spleens, and flow cytometric assays were used to analyze splenocyte surface sulfhydryls, oxidative burst and apoptosis. Our results suggest that deviations from the normal complement of MT genes alter the course of LM infection. Compared to the wild-type C57BL/6J (B6-WT) strain, a congenic partner that carries a larger number of Mt1 genes (B6-MTTGN) and a congenic strain in which both Mt1 and Mt2 are disrupted (B6-MTKO) both showed lower bacterial burdens three days post-inoculation. This difference was prominent in the first 48 h of infection, after which LM clearance occurred at comparable rates in all three strains. Lymphocytes from B6-MTKO mice exhibited increased cell death and increased levels of surface sulfhydryls compared to B6-WT and B6-MTTGN mice. Lymphocytes from B6-MTTGN mice had increased levels of intracellular oxidants compared to B6-WT and B6-MTKO mice. The oxidative burst by macrophages from infected B6-MTTGN and B6-MTKO mice was increased, suggesting one mechanism by which these strains might reduce the LM burden. These results indicate that MT gene dose dramatically influences host-defenses against LM infection.

Common trends in those assemblages indicated major past environmental events such as the Little Ice Age, air pollution and lake acidification. In contrast, no relationship between the composition of diatom and chironomid assemblages was found in the formerly acidified lake, suggesting different responses of assemblages to acidification. While chironomids showed shifts that are attributable to recovery, diatoms assemblage remained relatively stable throughout the uppermost layers of the sediment record. On the other hand, climatic-driven changes in assemblages detected in the deeper layers were more pronounced in diatoms than in chironomids.

In this paper the main mechanical properties of concrete produced with recycled aggregates obtained from crushing both structural and non-structural lightweight concrete are characterized. Various concrete mixes with replacement ratios of 20%, 50% and 100% of two types of coarse lightweight aggregates (LWA) by recycled lightweight concrete aggregates (RLCA) were studied in terms of their compressive strength, tensile strength, modulus of elasticity and abrasion resistance. Generally the experimental results show that all the studied properties are improved with the introduction of RLCA. In particular, concrete with RLCA has higher structural efficiency than the reference concrete, with LWA alone. It is thus concluded that more cost-effective structural lightweight concrete (LWC) can be produced with the introduction of RLCA. Moreover, it is shown that the RLCA obtained from non-structural lightweight concrete can be used to produce structural LWC. There is a slight reduction of the concrete's mechanical properties when the stronger LWA is replaced with the more porous RLCA obtained from non-structural lightweight concrete.

The purpose of this exploratory study is to better understand the current dynamics of the Malaysian market for smartphone and the usage behaviors of consumers. This paper presents the result of a survey on the trend of smartphone from the perspective of end consumers. The data was collected from 1814 respondents across major cities in Malaysia. This study has looked into the familiarity of users towards smartphones, choices of smartphone brand and service providers, and most importantly the determinants that influence their purchasing decision. Additionally, the consumers' preferences on smartphone specifications such as design, computing power, operating platform, and price were investigated. Furthermore, consumers' usage behaviors such as using smartphone for email, web browsing, gaming, and document reading were examined. The statistics presented provides fundamental information regarding the trends in the smartphone market and usage behaviors in Malaysia. Such information are useful for academics for the development of future works in the field, whereas for smartphone manufacturers, application developers and other stakeholders, they are able to plan their direction in the Malaysian smartphone market.

Biomimetic approaches to developing membranes for separations have seen a renewed interest in recent years. Biomimetic membranes incorporate biological elements or borrow concepts, ideas or inspiration from biological systems. Such membranes can take advantage of the strategies evolved by nature over billions of years for improving transport efficiency and specificity. This review covers biological paradigms that are relevant to membranes for separations and then presents an overview of strategies that are inspired by these paradigms. It also presents both fundamental and practical challenges to implementation of these strategies at application relevant scales.

Wireless-sensor-network-based home monitoring system for elderly activity behavior involves functional assessment of daily activities. MEMS, temperature and pressure sensors are used to determine the wellness of elderly based on daily activities. This paper describes ZIGBEE based home monitoring system for elderly based on daily activities the sensor node is composed of temperature sensor, force sensor and MEMS sensor , ATMEL microcontroller, LCD module & a ZIGBEE transceiver model is operated at 2.45GHZ band industrial scientific medical band. The developed system for monitoring and evaluation of essential daily activities was tested at the homes of four different elderly persons living alone and the results are encouraging in determining wellness of the elderly.

The southwestern willow flycatcher (Empidonax traillii extimus) is a riparian bird that spends winter months in Central and South America and summer breeding months in riparian zones of the American Southwest. Decline of the willow flycatcher population to less than 1000 breeding pairs prompted the Federal government to declare the species endangered, triggering a major recovery effort. The most important aspect of recovery is management and improvement of the riparian habitat of the bird population. Although the direct management of the species is primarily a biological issue, fluvial hydrology and geomorphology play an important role in understanding the dynamics of the present bird population and in designing a recovery plan because these physical systems are the substrates for the living communities which include the birds. Contributions of geomorphology and hydrology to the recovery plan include the use of watersheds and river basins as planning and evaluation units; understanding the connections between fluvial forms and riparian vegetation; implications for the bird population of the magnitude, frequency, duration, timing, and rate of change for various river discharges. The installation and operation of dams are the most important causes of hydro-geomorphic and ecological change in the region, so that management of these structures offers primary opportunities to improve the physical and biological conditions for the endangered species. Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is a non-invasive brain stimulation technique that activates neurons via generation of brief pulses of high-intensity magnetic field. If these pulses are applied in a repetitive fashion (rTMS), persistent modulation of neural excitability can be achieved. The technique has proved beneficial in the treatment of a number of neurological and psychiatric conditions. However, the effect of rTMS on excitability and the other performance indicators shows a considerable degree of variability across different sessions and subjects. The frequency of stimulation has always been considered as the main determinant of the direction of excitability modulation. However, interactions exist between frequency and several other stimulation parameters that also influence the degree of modulation. Pollen of Platanus was studied using light (LM) and electron microscopy (SEM and TEM). Overall, pollen is uniform in modern Platanus (small, tricolpate, prolate to spheroidal, reticulate, semitectate). A number of characters, however, display remarkable variability within a taxon and even a single anther (size; foveo-reticulate, fine to coarse reticulate ornamentation). Platanus kerrii (subgenus Castaneophyllum) differs from the remaining species by its high and ''folded'' reticulum and possibly the smooth colpus membrane. Moreover, to our knowledge, pollen of the P. kerrii -type is not known from the fossil record. The exine in modern and fossil Platanaceae shows great structural similarity, but the thickness of the foot layer within the ectexine is less variable and normally smaller in modern taxa. Furthermore, in Early Cretaceous to Early Cainozoic Platanaceae a number of distinct pollen types occurred that are not known within the modern Platanus. Considering pollen of Platanaceae from the Early Cretaceous to today, a dynamic picture of the evolution of the family emerges. In the first phase (Early Cretaceous) pollen of extinct genera such as Aquia differed considerably from modern Platanus and shows strong similarity to basal eudicot taxa such as Ranunculales (e.g. Lardizabalaceae). The Late Cretaceous Platananthus hueberi displays a distinct coarse reticulum that is unknown from modern Platanus but similar to some taxa of Hamamelidaceae (e.g. Exbucklandia). After the first phase of eudicot radiation that appears to have been characterized by strongly reticulate evolution, platanaceous diversity decreased in the course of the Cainozoic. Despite this, the pollen type of the modern subgenus Castaneophyllum (P. kerrii type) seems to be an innovation that originated after the initial radiation of the family.

Structure determination of integral membrane proteins requires milligram amounts of puri¢ed, functional protein on a regular basis. Here, we describe a protocol for the puri¢cation of a G protein-coupled neurotensin receptor fusion protein at the 3-mg or 10-mg level using immobilized metal a⁄nity chromatography and a neurotensin column in a fully automated mode. Fermentation at a 200-l scale of Escherichia coli expressing functional receptors provides the material needed to feed into the puri¢cation routine. Constructs with tobacco etch virus protease recognition sites at either end of the receptor allow the isolation of neurotensin receptor devoid of its fusion partners. The presented expression and puri¢cation procedures are simple and robust, and provide the basis for crystallization experiments of receptors on a routine basis.

The main aim of Knowledge Management (KM) is to connect people to quality knowledge as well as people to people in order to peak performance. This is also the primary goal of Learning Management (LM). In fact, in the world of e-learning, it is more widely recognised that how learning content is used and distributed by learners might be more important than how it is designed. In the last few years, there has been an increasing focus on social software applications and services as a result of the rapid development of Web 2.0 concepts. In this paper, we argue that LM and KM can be viewed as two sides of the same coin, and explore how Web 2.0 technologies can leverage knowledge sharing and learning and enhance individual performance whereas previous models of LM and KM have failed, and present a social software driven approach to LM and KM.

We aimed to determine the effectiveness of a lay-administered tailored education and coaching (TEC) intervention (aimed at reducing pain misconceptions and enhancing self-efficacy for communicating with physicians) on cancer pain severity, pain-related impairment, and quality of life. Cancer patients with baseline ''worst pain'' of P4 on a 0-10 scale or at least moderate functional impairment due to pain were randomly assigned to TEC or enhanced usual care (EUC) during a telephone interview conducted in advance of a planned oncology office visit (265 patients randomized to TEC or EUC; 258 completed at least one follow-up). Patients completed questionnaires before and after the visit and were interviewed by telephone at 2, 6, and 12 weeks. Mixed effects regressions were used to evaluate the intervention adjusting for patient, practice, and site characteristics. Compared to EUC, TEC was associated with increased pain communication self-efficacy after the intervention (P < .001); both groups showed significant (P < .0001), similar, reductions in pain misconceptions. At 2 weeks, assignment to TEC was associated with improvement in pain-related impairment (À0.25 points on a 5-point scale, 95% confidence interval À0.43 to À0.06, P = .01) but not in pain severity (À0.21 points on an 11-point scale, À0.60 to 0.17, P = .27). The improvement in pain-related impairment was not sustained at 6 and 12 weeks. There were no significant intervention by subgroup interactions (P > .10). We conclude that TEC, compared with EUC, resulted in improved pain communication self-efficacy and temporary improvement in pain-related impairment, but no improvement in pain severity. Ó

Growth of dahlia shoots in vitro was ca. 4 times faster in liquid medium than on solidified medium. In liquid standard medium (3% sucrose, macroelements according to Driver-Kuniyuki Walnut medium, microelements according to Murashige-Skoog medium, 0.44 M benzylaminopurine), the major medium ingredients were consumed for 75-80% during the first 6 weeks. Addition of extra ingredients increased growth, demonstrating that the amount of ingredients added at the start of culture was suboptimal. When the extra ingredients were given at the start of the culture, concentrations became too high and therefore inhibitory. When the ingredients were added during the subculture cycle by means of small aliquots of a concentrated solution or by means of slow-release tools, growth was strongly increased. Osmocote gave satisfactory results as a slow-release tool for inorganics. For organic ingredients (sucrose and benzylaminopurine), a novel slow-release tool was developed.

Different loading conditions are probable in many of the applications where fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites find use as potential and promising materials. Experimental studies have been carried out to study the effects of thermal ageing on mechanical behavior of glass fiber/epoxy composites. The inter-laminar shear strength (ILSS) is found to be affected by this conditioning. A change in loading rate may result in variation of failure modes.

The San Pedro River in the southwestern United States retains a natural flood regime and has several reaches with perennial stream flow and shallow ground water. However, much of the river flows intermittently. Urbanization-linked declines in regional ground-water levels have raised concerns over the future status of the riverine ecosystem in some parts of the river, while restoration-linked decreases in agricultural ground-water pumping are expected to increase stream flows in other parts. This study describes the response of the streamside herbaceous vegetation to changes in stream flow permanence. During the early summer dry season, streamside herbaceous cover and species richness declined continuously across spatial gradients of flow permanence, and composition shifted from hydric to mesic species at sites with more intermittent flow. Hydrologic threshold values were evident for one plant functional group: Schoenoplectus acutus, Juncus torreyi, and other hydric riparian plants declined sharply in cover with loss of perennial stream flow. In contrast, cover of mesic riparian perennials (including Cynodon dactylon, an introduced species) increased at sites with intermittent flow. Patterns of hydric and mesic riparian annuals varied by season: in the early summer dry season their cover declined continuously as flow became more intermittent, while in the late summer wet season their cover increased as the flow became more intermittent. Periodic drought at the intermittent sites may increase opportunities for establishment of these annuals during the monsoonal flood season. During the late summer flood season, stream flow was present at most sites, and fewer vegetation traits were correlated with flow permanence; cover and richness were correlated with other environmental factors including site elevation and substrate nitrate level and particle size. Although perennial-flow and intermittent-flow sites support different streamside plant communities, all of the plant functional groups are abundant at perennial-flow sites when viewing the ecosystem at broader spatial and temporal scales: mesic riparian perennials are common in the floodplain zone adjacent to the river channel and late-summer hydric and mesic annuals are periodically abundant after large floods.

Cognitive Load Theory provides a theoretical basis for understanding the learning process. It uses an information processing model to describe how the mind acquires and stores knowledge, and to provide an explanation for the limitations imposed by working memory. This paper describes Cognitive Load Theory, discusses its application in a number of areas, and explores its potential uses in understanding and improving novice programming and computer science education. A number of research directions are suggested.

Multi-proxy approach was used to reconstruct the environmental conditions of remote lakes in the High Tatra Mountains (Slovakia) over the past few centuries (approximately 500-1000 years). Short sediment cores (*30 cm) taken from three morphologically similar glacial lakes distributed along altitudinal gradient (subalpine to alpine conditions) were analysed for organic matter content (LOI), diatoms and chironomids. Both descriptive and correlative approaches were used for analysing stratigraphical data. Predictive canonical correspondence analysis and co-correspondence analysis were applied to directly relate physical and biological proxies to each other. The relationship between LOI and biotic proxies was inconsistent across groups and lakes. Concordant patterns in diatom and chironomid composition were found in two non-acidified lakes. Common trends in those assemblages indicated major past environmental events such as the Little Ice Age, air pollution and lake acidification. In contrast, no relationship between the composition of diatom and chironomid assemblages was found in the formerly acidified lake, suggesting different responses of assemblages to acidification. While chironomids showed shifts that are attributable to recovery, diatoms assemblage remained relatively stable throughout the uppermost layers of the sediment record. On the other hand, climatic-driven changes in assemblages detected in the deeper layers were more pronounced in diatoms than in chironomids.

Ketamine is a dissociative anesthetic with complex actions on the CNS. We investigated here the effects of ketamine anesthesia on somatosensory processing in the rat spinal cord, thalamus, and cerebral cortex, using the quantitative 2-deoxyglucose mapping technique. Unanesthetized or ketamine-anesthetized male Sprague-Dawley rats received a s.c. injection of a dilute formaldehyde solution (5%, 0.08 ml) into a forepaw, inducing prolonged noxious afferent input, or an equal volume of isotonic saline as a control stimulus. The 2-deoxyglucose experiments started 30 min after the injection. In the cervical enlargement of the spinal cord, ketamine had no significant effect on glucose metabolic rates in salineinjected animals, whereas it prevented the metabolic increases elicited by prolonged noxious stimulation in unanesthetized animals. At the thalamic level, ketamine increased glucose uptake in both saline-and formalin-injected rats in the lateral posterior, lateral dorsal, medial dorsal, gelatinosus, antero-ventral and antero-medial thalamic nuclei, whereas it decreased metabolic activity in the ventro-basal complex. At the cortical level, the drug increased metabolic activity in both control and formalin groups in the lacunosusmolecularis layer of the dorsal hippocampus, posterior parietal, retrosplenial, cingulate and frontal cortex; significant metabolic decreases were found in the CA1 region of the dorsal hippocampus and in the parietal 1 and 2 cortical areas. In the investigated brain regions, ketamine did not abolish noxious-evoked increases in glucose uptake, which were in fact enhanced in the forelimb cortex and in the lacunosusmolecularis layer of the hippocampus.

Background & Aims: In human and canine colon, both slow (slow waves, 2-8/min) and fast (myenteric potential oscillations [MPOs]; 16-20/min) electrical rhythms in the smooth muscle originate at the submucosal and myenteric borders, respectively. We used Ca 2؉ imaging to investigate whether interstitial cells of Cajal (ICCs) at these borders generated distinct rhythms. Methods: Segments of canine colon were pinned with submucosal or myenteric surface uppermost or cut in cross section. Tissues were loaded with a Ca 2؉ indicator (fluo-4), and activity was monitored at 36.5 ؎ 0.5°C using an electron multiplying charge coupled device (EMCCD). Results: Rhythmic, biphasic Ca 2؉ transients (5-8/min), similar in waveform to electrical slow waves, propagated without decrement as a wave front (2-5 mm/s) through the ICC-SM network lying along the submucosal surface of the circular muscle (CM). In contrast, rhythmic intracellular Ca 2؉ waves (ϳ16/min) and spontaneous reductions in Ca 2؉ were observed in ICCs at the myenteric border (ICC-MY). Normally, intracellular Ca 2؉ waves were unsynchronized between adjacent ICC-MY, although excitatory nerve activity synchronized activity. In addition, spontaneous reductions in Ca 2؉ were observed that inhibited Ca 2؉ waves. N-nitro-L-arginine (100 mol/L; nitric oxide antagonist) blocked the reductions in Ca 2؉ and increased the frequency (ϳ19/min) of intracellular Ca 2؉ waves within ICC-MY. Conclusions: ICC-SMs form a tightly coupled network that is able to generate and propagate slow waves. In contrast, Ca 2؉ transients in ICC-MYs, which are normally not synchronized, have a similar duration and frequency as MPOs. Like MPOs, their activity is inhibited by nitrergic nerves and synchronized by excitatory nerves.
