DAOs
I think DAOs can be interesting for crowd funding with benefits baked in. One example of this is buying a community mansion together.
The interview with Ian who leads Syndicate is nice.
Hidden Shortcomings of (D)AOs is a nice paper.

- Nouns DAO - Generative avatar art collective run by a group of crypto misfits. (Code)
Notes
- Turns out one of the killer use cases of NFTs has nothing to do with art. Instead they allow the bootstrapping of a community of thousands of smart, hungry people working towards a common goal. all of them sharing ownership and equity.
- Web3 returns us to a p2p world. Corporations can't advertise effectively. People can. And that means people need three ingredients: 1. Incentives (reasons). 2. Memes (talking points). 3. Values (belief). Projects to bet on are the ones that optimize for all three.
- You do not need past experience to start a DAO. The best communities discover web3 as a natural growth solution. There are no pre-requisites to sharing ownership with those who deserve it.
- Creating a DAO showcases how web3 can support methods of giving a voice to those who have been voiceless and/or discriminated against in the past.
- Would love to see a platform launch DAOs that don’t bother using crypto: LLC, buy membership via Stripe/Plaid, legally enforceable contracts, voting via web app + a proxy. We have all the tools to do it without massive gas fees and other problems right now.
- Tezos, a blockchain that is self-amending with staking & on-chain governance, is an example of a large DAO. Bakers and delegates are (perhaps unwittingly) participants in a decentralized autonomous organization, with the shared goal of maintaining the protocol
- A mistake I see DAO's making is asking for too big of a contribution, too early. Most bounties are too overwhelming for a new member. Instead, give members small ways (micro bounties?) to contribute and earn, and ease them into bigger commitments over time.
- If your goal is to solve really hard problems as quickly as possible, DAOs are not the best way to organize.
- After spending my entire career working in them, I can sadly guarantee you that being a dao/collective/coop in no way guarantees that the organization is more competent, fair, kind to it's members, or acting justly towards shared good.
