Abstract. During the 2019 and 2021 field seasons in the Byzantine District near the Pythion in Gortyn (Crete), archaeological data were acquired on the western sector, close to the paving of the external area of the shrine. The most important evidence is represented by a building, named D, which can be preliminarily dated to the VII sec. AD, but laying on the same level of the ancient temple. Building D shows a problematic relation with the remains of at least two burials, dating to the same period, which were brought to light in its easternmost room, and with the so-called building C, that was already investigated in previous years. The discussion about the new image of the district is accompanied by two appendices: the first one is dedicated to SFM photogrammetry of archival images and of RPA-acquired photographs for 3D reconstruction of archaeological features; in the second one, the just-discovered sepulchres are compared to similar evidences from Gortyn.

This paper presents three case studies, which have produced promising results. All of these were conceived and carried on in order to be based on cost-effective and straightforward procedures, which can be further experimented by other research groups. The final outputs are both sufficiently precise and adequate for the online sharing. The first case study focuses on developing an effective pipeline, based on UAV and 3D modeling, and easy enough to allow every member of the excavation team to carry on autonomously the documentation of its excavation area. The second case study has been aimed at 3D modeling of archival data in order to increase their informational potential. The third case study consisted in the elaboration of a high-definition photoplan of a wide (9x3 m) late antique mosaic. The proposed case studies show that the use of sustainable and low-cost procedures and tools leads to the production of graphic and photographic documentation maintaining good quality standards and suitable for communication purposes.

A reconsideration of Federico Halbherr’s field notes on the Pythion excavation has led to the acquisition of new data for the later phases of the temple. Consequently, it was possible to reassess the stratigraphic relations between the structures removed during that season of research, inside and outside the temple, and those brought to light in the Byzantine District. The team cleaned and documented both the sections of the nineteenth-twentieth-century excavation and the foundations of the demolished walls, making way for a more poignant interpretation of the later phases of the temple and the space in front of it. Likewise, a new 3D photogrammetric survey by UAV allowed a first sketching of a plausible reconstruction of the volumetry of the buildings in the same phases.

University of Siena, and aimed to an archaeological assessment of the historical complexity of an “average” small town in contemporary Sicily. The project is intended to understand – and above all to make the local heritage community understand – when, how and why this small town of Sicily, like many others in Southern Italy and in the Mediterranean, has assumed its current conformation. Starting from this basis, specific activities were designed and implemented with the cooperation of the local community: a) participatory archaeology activities, involving schools, cultural associations and individual citizens; b) realization of thematic routes, usable also through mobile phone apps; c) re-qualification of specific elements of the urban fabric; d) regeneration of the relationship between men and things in the urban space, with the aim of inducing virtuous behaviors and best practices of respect and protection of one’s living space and relationship.

The event, organised by a group of students and archaeologists from the University of Siena and re-arranged online due to the Covid-19 pandemic, has seen the participation of undergraduate, graduate, PhD students, freelancers, museological institutions and cultural associations. Papers and posters revolve around five major topics: the application of new technologies to the field of archaeology, the study of material culture, examples of public archaeology projects, advances in research and reflections on methodological problems. Contributing authors, including both Italians working abroad and foreign nationals working in Italy, presented case studies from prehistory to the medieval period, mainly centred in the Mediterranean context. These conference proceedings include 29 papers, 22 poster presentations and a synthesis of the closing round table, centred on the current status of archaeology in Italy and its possible future prospects.
