HYHAN IDEEN, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
GAITER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application led March 19, 1907.
Patented March 1'7, 1908.
Serial No. 363.170.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, liIYMAN COHEN, a subject of the Czar of Russia, and residingl at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New `York1` have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gaiters, of which the 'following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to overgaiters, and the object thereof is to provide a device of this character which gives the protection of overshoes of the Arctic type, and which at the same time produces the neat ell'ect of the usual gaiter, and a further object being to provide a gaiter of this class which may be worn with the trousers within the same or without the same, and which provides adjustable fastening devices to permit of this double use, and a still further object being to rovide a gaiter ol'V this class which is readily placed in position or removed from the shoe, and which is simple in construction and operation and very inexpensive.
My invention is fully described in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which the separate parts thereof are indicated by the same reference characters in each of the views and in which:
Figure 1 is a view of my invention in position for use. Fig. 2 is a similar' view thereof, but showing the same opened in order to more clearly set forth the construction. Fig. 3 a sectional view showing one method of holding the gaiter in its lowermost position, and Fig. 4 a similar view showing the gaiter when used in connection with a rubber foot covering.
In the drawings forming a part of this application, I have shown a gaiter a. in position for use upon a shoe l), said gaiter a comprising a front member c and a rear member d, the front member c being carried upwardly to form a tongue e and being provided for a predetermined distance at the bottom thereof with fastening devices f.
The rear member d is provided with two forwardly directed flaps g which are adapted to be folded over the tongue c and secured together by means of fastening devices 7L which are preferably made of the usual adjustable form, and the rear member d is also provided with a forwardly directed member t, which is provided with the male members 7c of the fastening devices f, although it will l be understood that ordinary buttons may be secured to the memberi and the front member (L be provided with button holes to enthe same in place of the fastencrsf.
Detachably connected by means of the usual glove fasteners, buttons or the like with each side of the tongue e, and at a point adj acent to the top thereof is an elastic strap 'In which is adapted to be passed rearwardly about the leg of a person wearing my gaiter, thereby holding the sides of the tongue inposition when the gaiter is being placed upon the shoe, and the gaiter is also provided with a strap a on one side thereof, which is provided with a buckle fn* and with a strap n on the other side thereof, said strap being adapted to pass beneath the foot to hold the gaiter in position. In the form shown in the drawings, the strap a and a3 are permanently connected with the gaiter at a predetermined distance at the bottom edge thereof, as shown at a* and supplemental securing devices are employed at a point adjacent the bottom edge of the gaiter to hold the straps and lower edge of gaiter together.
In Fig. 1 of the drawings, I have indicated in dotted lines the position of a pair of trousers when placed outside of the overgaiter, and itwill be seen that that portion of the overgaiter which is visible beneath the trousers is in all respects similar to the usual overgaiter, but because of the construction of the gaiter above the lower edge of the trousers additional protection from weather, snow or water is provided.
It will be obvious that various fastening devices may be employed in connection with my gaiter and changes in the same over the construction shown and described may be made within the scope of the following claims, and with this reservation,
W'hat I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is z- 1. An overgaiter, comprising a front member, and a rear member provided with integral forwardly directed iaps passing over said front member and with integral `forwardly directed members passing under said front member, a strap secured at each side of said gaiter, at a distance from the lower edge thereof, and supplemental devices for detachably connecting said straps to the lower edge of said gaiter and detachable means for connecting said flaps in front of said gaiter.
f2. An overgaiter, comprising a front member, a rear member provided with integral forwardly directed flaps passing over said and a strap detachably connected with said front member and with integral forwardly dir front member, at each side thereof, for holdrected flaps passing beneath said front mem- 1 ing the same in position.
ber, devices for detachably connecting said l In testimony that I claim the foregoing as 15 first named flaps to each other in front of l my invention l have signed my name in pressaid gaiter7 devices for connecting said last 1 ence of the subscribing witnesses this 18th named flaps to said front member a strap seday of March 1907.
cured at each side of said gaiter, at a distance HYMAN COHEN.
from the lower edge thereof, and'supple- Witnesses: mental devices for detachably connecting H. MOTTLAW, said straps to the lower edge of said gaiter l B. L. SACHS.
