Description
sufreV SHADDUGK, .or ELK RIVER TQWNSHIRIOWA.
Letters Patent No. 82,443, dated September 22, 1868.
IMPROVEMENT IN DR'AUGHT-EQALIZER.
tlg Simula rifemh tn 12u-tigen tettits' tteut filmmaking @ttt 'nf tigt tame.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, SETHSHADDUGK, of Elk River township, in Clinton county, State of Iowa., have invented a Devicefor Equalizing Draught on Mowers, Reapers, and Wagons; and I do hereby declare that the following is a clear and exact description of the construction and operationof the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nnture of my invention consists in constructing and arranging bar F with holes, so it can be adjusted. to equalize the draught between three, four, or more-horses, und, by observing the bar, the driver can quicklyA tell which part of the team is doing the most work, and an advantage can be given one part of the team over another by adjusting this bar.
In order that others may understand my invention, I will describe its construction and operation.
In the drawing- Figure ll. represents the device in perspective.
A represents thetongue.
B represents the double-tree.
Vc c, dc., hoIes through bar F.
lD, the bolt for bar F to Work on' in tongue A.
Y F, bar.
HH, staples to attach single-tree to.A
J, chain or rope for leading team.
K, ring for rope J to'pass through.
L, clevis to attach rope .Ito bar.
P, clevis to attach double-tree toV bar F. v
I construct the tongue A of any suitable material and in the ordinary manner. Through this tongue I make a mortivse for the bar F to work in. I also put a staple' and ring hear the end of the tongue for the rope .I to pass through, as at Kf v 'I construct the bar F of wood or iron, and have a number of holes in it, as at c c, Ste.
' I make clevises, double-tree, and singletreesin the ordinary manner, claiming no patent thereon.
Theropern'tion of this device is as follows: 'If we desire to equalize the draught between three horses, adjust the 'our F so the distance between bolt D and clevis I? will be one-third the distance of bolti D to clevis L. It' four horses nre used, have the bolt D in the centre of bur F, if it is desired to give one parti of the team advantage over the other part by moving the bnr F up or down, putting the bolt D to any one of the holes c c',`
Sie., to 'make the requisite distance, or by .changing the devices P and L to either of the holes, elfecting the sume purpose. l
The chain J, I attach to clevis L, and it passes through ring K, which holds it in line of tongue to the double-tree of singletree of forward tea'n. 4
I make the ring K into a link, if it needs more rooui, so as to prevent too muchdownward pressure on the tongue. This ring, K, farther allows Vthe chain J to move back and forwardas the team forward draw more or less than the' back team, thus allowing the free action of the bar F.
The driver, by observing the position of the har F, and the way it is inclined, c an readily tell which part of the team is drawing the most, and govern them accordingly.
what Iclaim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The draught-bar F, provided with adjusting-holes c c e, Ste., and ring K, substantially-for the purpose descrihed.- t y In testimony that I claim the foregoing, I hereby aliix my signature, on this 21st day of June, A. D. 1858, in the presence of two witnesses.
Witnesses:
THOMAS OAIDEREWOOD, Guo. W. STUMBAUGH.
