Description

UNITED STATES PATENT QEETCE.
l,HENRY w. PELL, or ROME, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN HARVESTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 71,906, dated December 10, 1867.
To a-ZZ whom it 'may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY W. PELL, of Rome, in the county of Oneida and State of New York, have invented certainv new and useful Improvements in Draft Attachments for Harvesters 5 and I do hereby ydeclare that the following is a sufficiently full, clear, and exact description thereof to enable any one skilled in the art to which my invention appertains lto make and useit, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which are made a part of this specification, and in which- Figure l represents a side elevation of a portion of the tongue and draft attachments of a mowing-machine; Fig. 2, a transverse section of the same at .r x, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both views.
My improved draft attachment, in its preferred form, consists of a carriage with grooved wheels running upon a ribbed guideway or strap attached to the tongue, a double-tree bolt projecting from the center of said carriage, and a draft-clevis mounted ndepend ently of the double-tree upon the same bolt. The customary draft-chain extends rearward and downward to the main frame of the machine, and the parts are so constructed and arranged as to combine thev following` advantages:
First. The carriage by which the Whitfietrees and draft-clevis are supported and attached sustains the vertical and lateral strain of the draft with the smallest possible friction and wear, and without violence to any part of the machine.
Second. The free-play of the draft-carriage upon the tongue under any degree or direction of strain is insured by the central attachment of the whiftletree-bolt.
Third. The double-tree or evener may oscillate freely on its bolt Without any control or resistance from the clevis from which the draftchain extends to the frame of the machine.
In the drawings, T represents a portion of the tongue of a mowing or reaping machine, and S a rigid metallic strap or loop attached thereto, and constituting the guideway of a carriage, C, whose wheels c c are grooved to iit over a rib, s, upon the guide-strap S. B is the whiftletree-bolt projecting rigidly from the center of the carriage C, and D represents the double-tree adapted to oscillate upon the said bolt. The draft-Clovis is mounted upon the bolt B in such a manner as not to interfere with the free oscillation of the double-tree. F represents a portion of thc draft-chain, which extends from the clevis E to any suitable part of theframe of the machine.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-' l. The carriage G, supported at both ends on Wheels or rollers o c, running on a guideway, S, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
2. The rib or groove joint between the friction-rollers and guideway to sustain the lateral pressure, as set forth.
3. The clevis-pin or whifdetree-bolt B, at cached to the center of the carriage C.
4. The independent attachment of the draftclevis to the whifdetreebolt to permit the independent 4oscillation of the whiflletree wit-l1- out affecting the clevis.
H. W. PELL.
