Be it known that we, JOHN GROVES and ENOGH B. TURNER, have invented an Improved Whirligig; and do hereby declare 'that the following is a full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the acompanying drawing, making a. part of this specieation.

Thenature of our invention consists in the employment of 'ahollmv handle and a piece of elastic, in constructing the toy known as av -whirligig.

To enable those skilled in the art to make :und use our invention, We will proceed to describe its construction and operation;

A, in the drawing, represents a. shaft, upon the ends of which may be placed the cross-arms F F. The shaft is held by the ears or ring BB, attached-to the hollow or perforated handle C, through {vhich a. piece of elastic, D, passes. This elastic is;V furnished at'it's outer end. vfith a. button, E, to prevent it from being drawn through the handle, and being wound upon the shaft A, to Whichit is to be attached. As this button is pulled backend forth, angalternate rotary motion of the shaft A is produced. 'Instead of the armsF F, any other device may be used to give the shaft suiiicientmomentum. The use of a piece o'f elastic, instead of' a common string, renders it practicable to produce the required rotary motion witha much shorter length.

What we claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- The combination of a shaft with a. piece of elastic, passing longitudinally through the handle of the toy, and operated substantially as described.
