ELECTRIC SIGNAL srnerrrca'rxow forming part of Letters item No. 707,305, dated August 19,1902.
Application filed November "1, 1901. Saris-1N0. 81,404. (smear:
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEWIS K. Ounnn'rr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illi nois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Electric Signals for Elevators; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which forms a part of this specification.
lhis invention relates to electric signals for elevators. Its object is to indicate to an elevator conductor when the floor of his car is level with the floor of the'building. The reason for the invention is found in the fact .that such a car is often stopped when its floor ing, with the result that persons using the car are liable to trip in enteririg or leaving the same, even though the variation be slight.
Heretofore it has been necessary for the conductor to watch the meeting floors and gage by his eye the proper level at which .to stop the car, and as from'his position his eye place and his sight thereof obscured by the car-door or by persons in the car it has been to a true level with a floor oi? the building, causing delay to shift the elevator one or more times and creating, liability to injury by tripping or fallis'r of persons entering or leaving the car.
The invention comprises a signal, prefer ably directly before the face of the conductor, designed to be actuated to indicate to him when the floor of the car is level with a floor of the building.
An embodiment of the invention isillustrated in the accompanying drawing, which is a diagrammatic view ofan elevator provided with the improvement.
is so positioned as to strike the contact-piece 11 when the floors of the'car and the building become flush, whereby the circuit is closed and the lamp caused to glow. Hence by watching the lamp the conductor may readily see whether the car-fi'oor is or is not flush with the building-floor. ,The degreeof accuracy of the indication with respect to the level of the two floors may be adjdsted by variation in the lengtli of one or both of the contact-pieces.
Having thus described the invention, what ,is claimed asnew, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is-
1. A signal for elevators, comprising an electrically-operated signal carried by the car, and car-actuated contact devices to operate the signal when the floor oi the car is flush with a floor of the building.
2. A signal for elevators comprising an electric circuit, an electric signal carried by the car in said circuit, a contact-piece at a floor of the building, and a contact-piece carried by the car in such position as to close the circuit and actuate the signal when the floor of the car is flush with the floor of the building.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presenceof two witnesses.
