Description

F. KERN. UNDBRWAIST.
(No Model.)
Patented'Dec. 11, 1894.
.. WASHINUTON D c UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK KERN; OF MATTOON, ILLINOIS.
UNDERWAIST.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 530,692, dated December 11, 1894.
Application filed October 10, 1894. Serial No- 525,688. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, FRANK KERN, a citize of the United States, residing at Mattoon, in the county of Coles and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Underwaists; and I dodeclare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it apper 1o tains to make and use the same, reference being had to the letters of reference marked on the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to under-garments. The object of my improvements is to provide a health-waist which is adapted to be fitted perfectly to the body of the wearer, and at the same time provide for the accurate adj ustment of the supporting buttons forthe garments which are ordinarily attached thereto. This waist, when once adjusted is readily taken off and put on by means of buttons or other ordinary fastenings. Stocking supporters depend from each side of the waist.
z 5 With these objects in view my invention consists in the following construction and combination of parts, the features of which will be described and the points of novelty then set forth in the claim.
In the drawings- Figure 1 is a front view; Fig. 2, a rear View of a garment embodying my invention; and Fig. 3 a detail view of a side piece.
This garment consists of side pieces A, 3 5 preferably cut from a single piece of cloth of substantially oval shape. The lower ends generallyproject some distance below the waist to a point, the stocking supporters B being attached thereto.
0 is a central slit extending from under the shoulders to the neighborhood of the hip and is provided with lacing holes and lacings D by means of which the shape of the garment may be adjusted. 4 5 E are the shoulder extension straps cut from the side-pieces A, the upper ends of which are joined together.
F is the front body portion of the garment, consisting of two pieces secured to the oppo- 50 site edges of the side-pieces A and having lacing holes and lacings G for adjusting the garment to the wearer.
H are the rear body portions laced and sedisposed strap bridging said division having cured to the side-pieces A precisely as the front portions F, with the exception that one 5 5 of the pieces H, instead of being permanently secured to the side-piece A, is provided with a series of buttons and button-holes I.
K are a double series of buttons secured to ihe sides of the garment for the purpose of buttoning other apparel thereto.
L are another series of buttons secured to the front rear and body portions of the waist, the peculiarity of which is that they are mounted upon straps M adjustable with the waist, whereby the buttons may be brought centrally front and rear of the waist, no matter what degree of adjustment is given to the waist by the various lacings thereof.
To secure the above result the buttons L are mounted upon horizontallydisposed straps M, each of which is provided preferably with a double series of lacing holes N extending outwardly from both sides of the buttons L.
These lacing holes are. adapted to substantially register with the lower series of lacing holes in the opposite'pieces of the front and rear body portions F and H. It will readily be seen that if the front and rear lacings are let out any distance, provision is made for such adjustment by passing the lacings through such series of holes N, in front or rear, as will correspond with such adjustment.
After the garment is once adjusted to the shape and for the perfect comfort of the wearer, it is not necessary to manipulate the lacings any further,,the garment being simply buttoned and unbuttoned by the buttons I, or equivalent fastenings.
I claim- An underwaist divided vertically provided with means for adj ustably securing the edges of the division, combined with a horizontally v fasteners upon the central portion thereof and means at each side of said fasteners for adjusting said strap whereby said fasteners may be brought to a central position between said division.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
FRANK KERN.
I Witnesses:
