Description

v UNITED STATES MICHAEL SIMMONS, OF HOWARDSVILLE, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVED ROOF.
Speciication forming part of Letters Patent No. 52,613, dated February 13, 1866.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MICHAEL SIMMONS, of Howardsville, in the county of Stephenson and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Portable and Self- Adj nstin g Roofs; and Ido hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanyin g drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is an end view, and Fig. 2 is an inverted plan View, of the portable roof.
A A A A in Fig. 2 represent four sections ofthe portable and selfadjusting roof'. Each section is composed of three or more pieces of plank set together and connected on their under sides by cleats B. Each section of roof is provided with a section of a hinge, C. Said hinges are connected by a pin passing through them. The joints in each section are broken by strips D on the top ofthe roof, to prevent water, 8vo., from passing between the connecvtions of the planks.
F in Fig. l represents a section of the roof without the hinge, and made in saine form as the sections A, being provided With hooks E to connect it to the sections A. When it is necessa-ry to enlarge the root' this section F is hooked to one of the cleats, B, in the sections A.
The roof is made so that one portion overlaps the other, as is shown in Fig. 1, and where the sections meet there is a groove, m, cnt on the upper side, and is also covered by one of the slats, D, to prevent the water passing between the sections.
By means of the hinges heretofore described this roof adjusts itself to suit the slant ofthe thing covered. It is very suitable for covering hay, grain, 85o., and when not in use can be taken apart by extracting the pin in hinges C and stowed away, not occupying but little space.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The hinged sections A A, constructed and arranged together, as and for the purposes herein specied.
In witness that I claim the foregoing Ihave hereunto set my hand in the presence of two witnesses.
MICHAEL sIMM'oNs.
Witnesses WILLIAM MCOLURG, J. M. MAsoN.
