Description
(No Model.)
A. PEABODY'. WATGH CASE, LOGKET, 0R SIMILAR ARTICLE.
No. 418,218. Patented Dec. 31, 1889.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ADOLPH PEABODY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
WATCH-CASE, LOCKET, OR SIMILAR ARTICLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 418,218, dated December 31, 1889. Application filed April 3, 1889. Serial No. 305,879. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ADOLPH PEABODY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in lVatch-Cases, Lockets, or Similar Articles, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to watches or lockets, either single or double case, and has for its main object to provide a construction whereby the article may be made more useful, ornamental, or artistic.
My invention consists. in the features of construction hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings accompanying this specification and forming a part thereof, Figure 1 is a front elevation of a watch-cover embodying my improvements; Fig. 2, a similar view of the outer disk; Fig. 3, a like view of the inner disk; Fig. 4, a front elevation of a watch or locket with the outer disk removed; Fig. 5, a similar view of awatch-cover with said disk replaced, and Fig. 6 an enlarged sectional view of a cover containing my invention.
In the various views the same parts will be found designated by the same letters of reference.
A represents a watch or locket, and B a cover thereof of any suitable size, shape, or construction.
My improvement is preferably applied to the back cover, though it is equally well adapted to the front cover.
The cover B is formed with a circular opening 0 at its center andwith a circular inwardly-extending tapering flange D, which is provided with a bezel-groove E, preferably eX- tending all around the said flange. Above this groove, at a suitable distance, is another circular bezel-groove or bearing F.
G represents a circular disk adapted to be fitted or snapped into the groove E and to be retained thereby, and H designates another and similar circular disk, preferably of greater diameter, adapted to be fitted or snapped into and held by the bezel-groove F. The inner disk G may be studded with jewels, or provided with a miniature or photograph, or may be enameled or otherwise ornamented. It may be composed of glass, gold, silver, or other metal or material.
Instead of making the inner disk G of metal or other non-transparent material, it may be made of glass or some other transparent material, so that a miniature or photograph may be either produced upon it or placed against it in such a manner that they could be viewed from within the case.
The outer disk H may be composed of glass, gold, or other metal, ornamented or not. Preferably this disk fits even or flush with the outer surface of the cap; but this is not of necessity so, as some pleasing or useful result may be attained by its projection above the surface of the cover. By reason of the bezel-grooves neither of the disks can be removed except by pressure from the inside.
The inner disk may be dispensed with and the ornamentation applied wholly to the outer disk, either on its inner or outer surface, or both. If theinner disk be dispensed with, the outer disk may be made of glass or other transparent substance, and the ornamentation applied to the inner cap or body of the watch or locket and in line with the disk or the opening in the cap B, so as to be observable without opening the cap.
When both disks are used, the outer one may be set with diamonds or other stones, or
have openings through it without liability of dust passing through to the watch-movements. Both disks are readily removable by pressing them outwardly, and hence others may from time to time be substituted, agreeably to fashion or the inclination of the wearer.
By my invention it will be seen thatl have provided a construction of watches, lockets, &c.', by which greatlyincreased ornamental effects may be produced, and by which the ornamentation of the article may be varied with facility at the desire of the owner, as the disks are to be made interchangeable with all watch-cases constructed in accordance with my invention. The peripheries of the disks fit into the grooves on the bezel principle, thus dispensing with solder or other fastening means and enabling expeditious attachment and detachment of the center pieces.
It will thus be seen that with my device any number or style of design or ornamentation or disposition of the same are brought Within the discretion of the trade or persons using it.
VVhatI claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In an article of the classes stated, a cover B, having a circular opening 0, an inwardly extending flange D, and circular grooves E and F, substantially as set forth.
2. In an article of the classes stated, a cover B, having a circular opening 0 and circular grooves E and F, in combination with the removable disks G and H, substantially as set forth.
3. In an article of the classes stated, a cover B, having a circular opening C, inwardly-projecting flange D, and grooves E and F, in combination with removable disks G and H, substantially as set forth.
Signed at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, this 26th day of March, A. D. 1889.
ADOLPI-I PEABODY.
