Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed April 11, 1911.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, ALFRED SPANEY and JOSHUA W. MAYER, citizens of the United States, residing, respectively, at Piermont, Rockland county, and at the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in J ewelry, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.

Our invention relates to improvements injewelry and thesame has for its object more particularly to provide an article of jewelry comprising a holder or receptacle having an open-work portion, and a member contrastingeffectively with said open-work portion which may be readily secured in position within said holder or receptacle, and serve as a support or reinforcement for said openwork portion.

Further, said invention has for its object to provide an article of jewelry comprising a holder or casing having an open-work portion or cover, and a dished reinforcing member removably secured in said holder to the rear of and engaging said open-Work portion.

Further, said invention has for its object to provide an article of jewelry comprising a holder or casing having a cover provided with an open-work portlon, and provided upon its inner edge adjacent to said openwork portion with an annular recess, and a disk detachably secured in said recess serving to support and reinforce said open-work portion, and visible through said open-work portion of said'cover.

To the attainment of the aforesaid objects and ends, our invention consists in the novel details of construction and in the combination, connection and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described in the specification and then pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanyin drawings, forming a part of this specification, wherein like numerals of reference indicate-like parts, Figure 1 is a face view of a watch showing one form of open-work cover, constructed according to, and embodying, our said invention; Fig. 2 is an edge view thereof; Fig.1 3 is a face view showing the open work cover portion without its reinforcmg member or backing; Fig. 4 is a face view of the reinforcing member or backing removed from said cover portion, and Fig. 5 is a detail sectional view taken substantially on the line 5-5 of Fig. 3 showing the reinforcing member or backing in position within said cover portion.

In said drawings 10 denotes a watch or analogous article of jewelry provided with a cover llcomprising an annular portion 12 having its central portion cutout at 13, and provided at the inner edge, or cut-out portion of said cover, with an inwardly-extending rim or flange 14, which serves to form a shoulder 15 upon the inner side of said cover.

16 denotes an ornamental or filigree portion which is preferably made of delicate metal work of any suitable design having its ends or outer edges permanently secured to the inner edge ofv the flange or rim 13 of the cover 12. By preference the ornamental filigree portion 16 is slightly convexed and the same may be studded with precious stones 17 17, or otherwise ornamented.

18 denotes a metallic disk which is substantially equal in thickness to the cover portion 11 less the thickness of theflange or rim 14 thereof. The outer side of said disk 18 is provided with an enamel coating of any suitable color, or otherwise ornamented or treated in order to contrast effectively with the ornamental or fili ee portion 16 of the cover section, and be visible through the openings therein. The said disk 18 is preferably made flat and adapted to be forced into the recessed portion of the cover 12 by springing the same into position therein, so thatwhen said disk shall be properly positioned within said. cover 12, it will be slightly dished in order to conform itself to, and contact directly with the rear surface of the ornamental or filigree portion 16 of the cover and serve to support and reinforce the same. 7

By means of our improved construction, we-are enabled to provide the coverportion of a watch, locket, or other article of jewelry, with a removable section or back which may be provided upon its outer surface with an enamel coatin or such surface ornamentation as will e ectively contrast with the ornamental .portion of said cover and be visible through the openings thereof.

To remove -said disk or backing 18, it

merely becomes necessary to press the same inwardly by applying pressure to the outer surface thereof by means of any small instrument or object capable of being passed through the openings in the ornamental or filigree portion of the cover.

It will be noted that by reason of our improved construction, we are enabled to provide a cover with such removable back or disk without increasing the ordinary thickness of the cover of the watch, or article of jewelry, in connection with which the same is used, and produce the appearance of an integral device. Further, it will be noted that by reason of the peculiar construction of the cover and the removable disk therefor, we are enabled to produce a watch case, or analogous article of jewelry, which will permit of the ready removal of said backs, and the substitution of backs of different colors or effects without necessitating any special or independent fastening means to secure the same in position within said cover, in order to support and reinforce the open work portion of the cover.

Having thus described our invention, what we claim and desire to secure by Let: ters Patent, is:

I 1. An article of jewelry comprising a casin having a central opening therein recesse along its inner edge, an openwork, ornamental member secured in said opening adjacent to the outer surface of said casing, and a removable plate or disk conformed a v to said opening and engaged along its edge by the recessed portion of said-opening to support and reinforce said openwork, ornamental member, substantially as specified.

2. An article of jewelry having a cover section comprising an annular member having an annular recess, and an ornamental filigree member secured along .its edges to the inner edge" of said annular member, and a removable back for said cover section sprung into said annular recess and engaging said ornamental filigree member from the rear thereof and serving to support and reinforce the same, substantially as specified.

3. An article of jewelry having a cover section comprising an annular member having an annular recess, and a dished ornamental filigree member secured along its edges to the inner edges of said annular member and having its central portion arranged in a horizontal plane above the plane of inner edge of said annular member, and

a removable back for said cover section dished into said annular recess anden 'aging said ornamental filigree member rom the rear and serving to support and reinforce the same, substantially as specified.

4. An article of jewelry having a cover section comprising an annular member having an annular recess in its back along its force the same, substantially as specified.

5. An article of jewelry having a cover section comprising an annular member having an annular recess in its back along its inner edge, and an ornamental filigree membersecured along its edge to ,the inner projecting edge of said annular member, and a removable back for said cover section hav:
