It is the principal purpose of this invention to provide a device of this character in which a nippie may be readily attached to a cap by compressing the base of the nipple from two opposing sides and sliding it into the cap through a slot in the side of the cap, the cap having a top aperture and a flange around the aperture for pressing a corresponding flange on the nipple down against the top of a bottle.
I will describe the preferred form of the invention by reference to the accompanying drawing. It is to be understood, however, that the drawing and description are illustrative only and are not to be taken as limiting the invention except in so far as it is limited by the claims.
In the drawin Fig. 1 is a vertical sectional view taken through a bottle and a cap and nipple embodying my invention;
Fig. 2 is a sectional view substantially on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a sectional view substantially on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the cap; and
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary elevation of the nipple as it appears in looking at the right hand side of the nipple as it is shown in Fig. 1.
Referring now in detail to the drawing, the numeral 6 indicates 'a baby bottle which has a screw-threaded top or neck at 1 upon which the screw-threaded portion 8 of a cap 9 may be secured. The cap has a, central aperture ill in the top thereof and a top flange II for clamping a nipple l2 down upon the upper end of the bottle neck I. The nipple I! has a comparatively heavy shoulder portion at l3 for resting on top of the flange II and a reduced portion H which just fits snugly within the opening Ill in the top of the cap. Below the reduced portion I4, the nipple is provided with the outwardly extending flange I 5 which is adapted to be clamped between the top of the bottle neck I and the flange Ii on the cap.
It is desirable to have the nipple readily attachable to and detachable from the cap, and, in order to accomplish this result, I provide a slot IS in the flange ll of the cap which needs only to be slightly greater than twice the thickness of the neck portion It. This slot i6 is connected to a wider slot l'l which is in the side wall of the cap directly beneath the flange I i, the wider slot ll being of such proportions that, when the nipple is pinched on opposite sides so as to close the opening thereof at the neck portion [4, the flange i5 can slide in through the opening II. In other words, the 5101'; I1 has a depth substantially equal to the thickness of the flange l5 of the nipple or slightly greater than this thickness, and the width of the slot I1 is slightly more than twice the width of the flange ii on the nipple.
It is, of course, evident that the flange portion ll of the cap being cut away at i6 will not at this point press down upon the flange l5 of the nipple. I make the nipple solid from the thickened portion i3 down to thelevel of the bottom of the flange l5 as indicated at It on Figs. 1, 3, and 5, and I also extend the body of the nipple at the bottom thereof out into the slot l'l as indicated at [9 in Fig. 2 so that, when the nipple is inserted in the cap, the portions IQ of the nipple fit snugly in the slot i1 and extend out to the outer wall of the cap. The portion i8, of course, runs upwardly from the portions l9 to substantially fill the slot I6. I also provide a flap or projection 20 which is formed integral with the portions i8 and i9 and which extends down over the slot II. This flap 2il acts as a cover for the slot through the slot H with the neck portion l 4 passing through the slot Hi. When the nipple is all the way in, the flap 20 will, of course, lie flush against the side of the cap, and the cap can then be screwed down upon a bottle top so as to clamp the flange ii of the nipple against the top of the bottle. The thick heavy portions [8 and i9, being connected to the flange l5 and to the heavy shoulder I3, will seal the nipple to the top of the bottle at the slots l6 and i1 due to the yielding nature of the rubber from which the nipple is made. The portions [9, fitting within the slot i! also tend to hold the nipple tightly against the top of the cap.
When it is desired to remove the nipple from the cap, the sides can be pressed together, and it will be slid out through the slots I6 and i1 without any diificulty.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patcut is:
1. A baby nipple having a shoulder portion, a neck portion depending from the shoulder portion, and a flange portion beneath the neck portion, said shoulder portion and flange portion being directly united to each other by a rib extending from the neck portion out to the exterior of the nipple at one section in the circumference of the nipple whereby to form a. heavier stiffened portion.
2. A can for attaching nipples and the like to bottles and the like, said cap having a body portion and having a top portion provided with an opening and a flange around the opening, said cap having a slot in the flange running from the opening out to the outer surface of the cap, said cap having an extension of said slot cut down into the body portion of the cap below the level of the flange, said extension being widened below the level of the flange.
3. In combination, a bottle cap having a top flange and an opening, said cap having a slot therein, said slot having one portion in the side of the cap and a second portion communicating with the first named portion and leading to the opening within the top flange, and a nipple having a bottom flange insertable through said first named portion of the slot, and a thickened shoulder portion for resting upon the top flange of the cap, said shoulder portion and the flange on the nipple being connected by a thin neck portion throughout most of the circumference, the neck portion being filled out to the periphery of said bottom flange over the remainder of the circumference to substantially fill the slot in the cap flange when the nipple is inserted in the cap.

In combination, a bottle cap having a top flange and an opening, said cap having a slot therein, said slot having one portion in the side of the cap and a second portion communicating with the first named portion and leading to the opening within the top flange, and a nipple having a bottom flange insertable through said first named portion of the slot, and a thickened shoulder portion for resting upon the top flange of the cap, said shoulder portion and the flange on the nipple being connected by a thin neck portion throughout most of the circumference, the neck portion being filled out over the remainder of the circumference to substantially fill the slot in the cap flange when the nipple is inserted in the cap, said nipple having a flap extending down over the fllled out portion to cover the slot in the side of the cap.
5. In combination, a bottle cap having an opening in the top thereof and a flange around said opening, said cap having a slot from the opening extending through the flange and down into the side wall of the cap, said slot being widened circumferentially of the cap below said flange, a nipple having a flange portion insertable through said widened portion of the slot, a neck portion insertable through that portion of the slot which cuts the cap flange and a shoulder to overlie the cap flange, the neck portion and flange portion being fllled out to the shoulder to provide a solid portion to seat in the slot in the cap when the nipple is inserted.
6. In combination, a bottle cap having an opening in the top thereof and a flange around said opening, said cap having a slot from the opening extending through the flange and down into the side wall of the cap, said slot being widened circumferentially of the cap below said flange, a nipple having a flange portion insertable through said widened portion of the slot, a neck portion insertable through that portion of the slot which cuts the cap flange and a shoulder to overlie the cap flange, the neck portion and flange portion being filled out to the shoulder to provide a solid portion to seat in the slot in the cap when the nipple is inserted. and said nipple having a flap thereon projecting down over the slot in the side wall of the cap.

In combination, a bottle cap having a top flange and an opening, said cap having a slot therein, said slot having one portion leading from the opening through said top flange toward the side of the cap, and said slot having a second portion at the outer end of the first named portion substantially wider than the first named portion, and a nipple having a bottom flange adapted to be clamped between the top flange of said cap and the top of a bottle by securing the cap on the top of the bottle, said bottom flange on the nipple being connected to the body of the nipple by a neck portion, and said nipple having a thickened shoulder portion at the top of the neck portion for resting upon the top flange of the cap, said bottom flange of the nipple being insertable into the cap through the wide portion of said slot.
8. In combination, a bottle cap having a top flange and an opening, said cap having a slot therein, said slot having one portion leading from the opening through said top flange toward the side of the cap, and said slot having a second portion at the outer end of the first named portion substantially wider than the first named portion, and a nipple having a bottom flange adapted to be clamped between the top flange of said cap and the top of a bottle by securing the cap on the top of the bottle, said bottom flange on the nipple being connected to the body of the nipple by a neck portion, said bottom flange of the nipple being insertable into the cap through the wide portion of said slot.

In combination, a bottle cap having an opening and a continuous flange around the opening, said cap having a narrow slot extending from said opening to the periphery of the cap and down into the body portion of the cap below the level of the flange, and a nipple of resilient material having a bottom flange which is compressible laterally so as to be insertable into the cap through said slot and beneath said cap flange, said bottom flange, because of its resiliency, being adapted to expand in the cap and be clamped between said cap flange and the top of a bottle by securing the cap on the top of the bottle.
