.Application filed July 27,1926, serial No. 125,25o`7 and in Great-'Britain zrulyes, 1925.
l. rThis invention relates to raising and traversing gear. ofthe kind comprising a base carrying one or more carriages mounted for longitudinal movement along said baseand adapted to carry lifting jacks, movement being imparted to the said carriages by means of a threaded shaft or screw mounted in the said base and engaging nuts onthe said carriages.v l .I
The object of .the invention is to provide means whereby the position of acarriage along the screw shaft, and more especially the -relative position ot va. plurality ot carriages,` may be readily altered. KAnother object of the invention is .to provide a compact apparatus which will be particularly adapted for use in restoringr derailed trucks and the i like to the rails of a railway track.
According to the invention the carriage nuts 'are associated with the carriages in such a manner that the carriages may be lifted away from the base so that the nuts may be movedseparately along the shaft.
In a preferred formV of-construc'tion the base comprises two rail lengths'spaced apart1 while the carriages comprise blocks mounted on rollers running on the said rail lengths.
The invention will now be described with reference to vthe accompanying drawing which shows an example of construction ot the raising and traversing gear according to the present invention, particularly adapted for use in derailment operations., f
In the said drawing: l
Fig. 1 is a side elevation with partsin section,
Fig. 2 is aplan view of Fig. l; andv Fig. 3 is an end view of Fig. 1.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, the base comprises two parallel lengths of rail, a a1 preferably llat bottomed. which are spaced apart at their ends by distance pieces 6, b1 detachably secured to the said rails, and which also serve as bearings to snp;l port a threaded shaft rc running the whole length of the base, the end ot the saidshaft being shaped to receive a ratchet Spanner d or 4a handle or the like.
Two carriages, e, e1 are shown as provided, and these are in the form of rectangular blocks e2 mounted on rollers e3 running on Vthe said rails a, al. Underneath each carriage there is detachably secured a hollow bracket or cage c4 which tits over a nut 01 in threaded engagement with the shaft c, in such a manner that the nut is held against turning.A On the upper face ot the carriage a recess is formed to `receive the base'ot` a litting jack]c whilela central hole is formed through the carriage at the middle of the recess to receive the threadedshaft or screw f1 of thejack, thus allowing for a relative large-lifting range. he base of the jack is preferably` roundas also is the recess,'the jack being held against turning movement by, ymeans ota spigot f2 projecting from its base into a corresponding recess at the edge oit the main recess.- An eye bolt f3 or the like maybe provided for holding down the jack.
Y.' will beseenthat when the shaft c is turnedythe two carriages will move along therails at a uniform .distance apart. In order that this distance may be va'ried'eX- p editiouslv` or the'position of the carriages otherwise. changed, the cage c4 underneath each carriage maybe in the form of a flanged square box asshownfhaving its top and bottom removed, the jnutc1 being of square section so aste fit inside the cage without the possibility of turning.. while two opposite sides of the cageare slot-ted to receive the screw shaft. n With this arrangement a carriage may be lifted otl3 Vthe rails altogether and its nut spun around until the desired position is reached, whereupon the carriage may be replaced..` f
In use', the apparatus is placed on the rails ofthe track underneath the derailed truck or thelike, and where the truck is farther than usual from the rails one end ot the base may have to be temporarily supported. The shaft c is then turned until the carriages e, e1 lwith their acksV are underneath the sole or under trame ot "the truck which rests on the springs whereupon the truck is jacked up until the wheels clear the rails. The shaft c is then turned until the wheels are over the track` and the jacks lowered until the wheels rest on the rails. It both pairs of wheels are ott the rails. the operation is repea-ted tor the other pair of wheels.
It will be seen that the only damage to the track as a result of using the apparatus according to the present invention occurs where both pairs of wheels are off the rails, in which case while the one pair is being angled into position the other pair acts as a pivot and thus tends slightly to enlarge any hole that has already been made by the wheels as they came off the rails.
To allow for portability, the securing means between the rail lengths e, e and the distance pieces b, lil are preferably in the torni oilE eotters g so that the base, which is the heaviest part7 may be readily assembled and disassembled. and this may be conveniently ell'ected iu situ il' desired.
lleles are preferably drilled as at la along one el the llanges of each el the rails a, (il to receive bolts which project below the level olI the rails to prevent the apparatus being slid ofi' the permanent way.`
The apparatus according to the present invention is adapted for al manner of uses where a vertical and horizontal movement are required, and particularly Where space is restricted, for example in t 1e case of railway wol-lt, where a derailment occurs at a shar J bend which precludes the use of the usua cranel or at crossinfrs Where it is imposible to use ranips and short rails.
1What l claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:- t
Il. Raising and lowering gear comprising in combination a trackway, a carriage movable along the traekway and freely lift-able bodily oil the same, a jack on the carriage, a threaded shaft mounted longitudinally in the trackivay, a nut adapted to travel on said shalt1 and a cage secured to the base ot' the carriage and wherein the nut is disposed when said carriage is in place on the lraclrwa but which is withdrawn directly troni said nut when the carriage is lifted.
L). Raising and lowering gear comprising in combination a traekway, a carriage movable along the tracliivay and freely liftable bodily oli the same7 a jack on the carriage, a threaded shaft mounted longitudinally in the traclway, a nut adapted to travel on said shaltv and a cage secured to the base ot' the `arria ;e and wherein the nut is disposed when said carriage is in place on the lrackway, but which is Withdrawn directly Vl'roni said nut when the carriage is lifted, `said cage acting to hold the uut itself against rotation when engaged therewith.
3. Raising and lowering gear comprising in combination a traelcway, a carriage 1novable along the trackivay and freely littable bodily ol the saine, a jack on the carriage, a threaded shaft mounted longitudinally in the traekway, a nut adapted to travel on said shaft, and a cage secured to the base of the carriage and wherein the nut is disn posed when said carriage is in place on the trackway, but which is Withdrawn directly l from' said nut when the carriage is lifted,
said cage having oppositely-located slots to receive and release Said shaft alternatively.
l. Raising and lowering gear comprising in combination a traekway, acarriage movable along the trackway and freely liftable bodily oil the same, a `iaek on the carriage, a threaded shalt mounted longitudinally in the traeltway, a nut adapted lo travel on said shaft, and a cage secured to the base of the carriage and wherein the nut is disposed when said airriage is in place on the traekway, but which Withdrawn directly from said nut when the carriage is litted, said cage acting to hold the nut itself against rotation whenengaged therewith and having opposilelydocatedslots to receive and release said sha'lt alternatively.
5. Raising and lowering gear comprising in Combination a trackway, a carriage movable along the tracltway and freely liltable bodily ott' the saine, a jack, on the carriage, a threaded shaft mounted longitudinally in the trackvvay7 an open cage of polygonal cross-section secured to the base of the earriage, and a polygonal nut on said shaft fitting removably Within `said cage when said carriage is in place on the traekway so to be held against rotation by the cage but adapted to travel on the shaft when the latter is rotated, said cage being withdrawn directly from said nut When the carriage is lifted.
In witness whereof l have signed specilieation.
