It our invention is to provide pa l that will not tip upset "when sustroni the bell.
iher obi-cot to nrovide a nail in a painter can carry ditl'erent paints and in which the unequal use of the ditto eut nuints will not affect the equilibrium of oil.

plan View of the Wh ich pail. shown tive view oi bail and hail plate forming detmls 0t our invention.
F 4 is a perspective view of a bail plate. 5 is a perspective View of a sectional container forming a detail of our invention.
tlur invention comprises a pail A carrying bail. plates a at diametrically opposed places on its outer surface. The bail plates may be secured upon the pail by any suitable means such as the rivets a. Each bail plate carries an upwardly projecting lug (I? which is spaced from the body a of said plate by the flange a which connects the lower end of the lug and the upper end of the body. The lug has a circular perform tion at extending theret-hrough and a narrow elongated slot 0' extends upwardly into the lug: from the perforation.
The bail B comprises a band or body 72 substantially rectangular in cross section and semi-circular in form. and has a set 6 formed in it substantially midway of its ends the seat being given any desirable t'orm in order to accommodate a rung of a ladder etc. The band is turned centerward at places 6 spaced some distance from the ends 72 of the baud and at a place 71 intermediate the turn 5 and the end. Z the band is bent substantially a right angle, thereby forming lugs Z2 at each end of the bail. The arm 7) or nortion ntermediate each lug and the circular portion of the band is turned at such angle in relation to the band that the opposite sides E6 of the arm will lie in planes at right angles to the sides 6 of the ban-Cl. The bail is of a thickness slightly less than the idth or" the slot and of a Width sli h r es than the diameter of the perrorotion a The auxiliary buckets or sectional containers C may be made varying sizes and Y ins and lit into the nail as shown in Fig. 2, whereby it is possible to carry a diilerent commodi; or a ditlerent paint in caeh see tionsl compartment. When the device is to be used by painters. an upwardly extending bracket 0 is carried by the sectional container the upper end of the bracket b tin ncd upon itself end being provided with a notch 0' into which a brush may be inserted whereby the brush may be retained upon the bracket While it ditlercnt point and brush is being: used.
The oneration oi our device is tollows:
Normiilly gravity causes the arms to lie in the circular perforation in the bail plate. therefore the bail can assume a position at the side of the pail as shown in l, the sides of the arms lying substantially in a horizontal. plane. When the bail and bracket 2 lifted, the arms are revolved and their sides extend in a vertical plane and enter the elongated slots in the bail plate thereby locking the pail against rocking or swinging motion in relation to the bail. The lugs at the ends of the bail preclude separation of the boil and bucket. Assuming that a paint or is using a bucket of our invention, he can carry in separate compartments in the bucket. a quantity of body paint and a quantity of trim paint. Should he use these paints in such proportion that one compartment be emptied before the other, the pail will not turn or sag to one side and be subject to tipping when the painter draws his brush over the edge of the pail after dipping the brush in the paint.
From the foregoing it is readily apparent that a cage or Wire basket may replace the pail A when auxiliary buckets are used for purposes as those stated.
What We claim is:
1. In a device of the class described, the combination of a pail, bail plates on the pail, a group of sectional containers in the pail, brackets on the sectional containers to support a brush, a bail engaging the bail plates, the bail and hail plates being: adapted to lock the bail and pail against relative movement when the pail is suspend ed from the bail, lugs on the ends of the bail to preclude the separation of the bail and bail plates.
2. The combination with a pail, sectional containers in the pail, a bracket on the sectional container adapted to support a brush, bail plates comprising a body, a. lug and a flange spacing the lug from the body and the pail, the lug having a. circular perforation and an elongated slot extending up Wardly from the perforation, and a bail substantially rectangular in cross section, a seat midway its ends. having arms adapted to extend thru the perforations and slots in the lugs, being so disposed in relation to the bail that they will enter the elongatled slots in thc'bail plate when the pail is suspended from the bail, and lugs extending from the arms precluding separation of the bail from the pail.
In testimony whereof, we have hereunto subscribed our names this 22nd day of October, 1.921.
