IRONING BOARD.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HUGH L. CALLAWAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at lVaulresha, in the county of Waukesha and State of lVisconsin, have invented certain ne and useful Improvements in an Ironing Board, of which the following is a specification.

The present invention relates to an ironing board and has for its principal object to provide a support for the ironing board which may be folded in a compact position in relation thereto and one which is easily operated and when in an extended position may not be accidentally folded.

Another important object of the invention is to provide a device of this nature which will be simple and efficient in construction, reliable in operation, inexpensive to manufacture, durable, attractive in appearance, and well adapted to the purpose for which it is designed.

\Vith the above and numerous other ob jects in view as will appear as the descrip' tion progresses, the invention resides in certain novel features of construction, and in the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.

Referring to the drawings in detail it will be seen that the ironing board 1 is of conventional construction and is provided on its under face a distance from its larger end with a bracket 2 terminating in depending apertured ears and a similar bracket 3 acent the smaller end and of similar construction although not quite as long. These 7 brackets may be of any preferred construction the present forms being merely illustrated by way of example. A frame 4 is pivoted to the bracket 2 atits upper end while its lower end is beveled so as to rest firmly upon the floor or other support when the device is in use. cated generally at 6 is formed in two sections. The primary section 7 is pivoted intermediate its ends to the intermediate portion of'the frame 4 extending between the legs thereof. A rung 8 pivots the primary section 7 to the frame 4. The secondary .ection 9' of the frame 6 is pivoted to the bracket 3 one end and intermediate its ends is pivoted to the upper end of the primary section 7 by arung 10. The lower, end of the section 9 isbeveled so as to engage the rulng8 when the device is an section 7 so that when the device is in a.

folded position both sections 7 and 9 of the frame 6 will be disposed between the legs of the frame 4.

In order to fold the device when it is in a position such as is shown in Figure 1 one hand may be grasped about the section 7 of frame 6 so as to move it toward the smaller end of the board 1 which will cause the va rious parts to take the position shown to advantage in Figure 3 and finally take the position shown in Figure 4. l/Vhen the device is in an extended position as shown in Figure 1 it will not be possible for the supporting mechanism to fold accidentally. The structure allows the board 1 to be clear underneath at both ends which is desirable and when folded presents a comp-act structure taking up a minimum amount of space so as to be readily stored away when not in use.

I have, in the present instance, shown and described the preferred embodiment of the invention which will give in practice satisfactory and reliable results, and it is to be understood that the same is susceptible of modification in various particulars without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages. v

Having thus described my'invention what I claim as new is 1. In combination, an ironing board, a

frame pivoted to the ironing board, a second 7 frame including two sections, one of said sections pivoted to the ironing board, the

other of said sections pivoted intermediate its ends to an intermediate portion of th first frame and at its ends to an intermediate portion of the first section, and means whereby the sections of the second frame may-be held in alignment with each other for holding the frames in an extended position and said frames being foldable against the bottom face of the ironing board.

2. In combination, an ironing board, a frame pivoted to the ironing board, a second fram including a pair of sections, one of said sections pivoted intermediate its ends to an intermediate portion of the first frame and at its end to an intermediate portion of the other section, said last mentioned section being pivoted to the ironing board, and a rung extending between the first mentioned section for receiving the ends of the second mentioned section so that the sections may be held in alignment with each other and the frames in an extended position.

3. In combination, an ironing board a frame including a pair of spaced parallel legs pivoted to the ironing board, a second frame including a pair of sections both of said sections formed with a pair of spaced parallel legs, one section being pivoted intermediate its ends to an intermediate portion of the first frame, the legs of said section being disposed between the legs of the first frame, the other section being pivoted to the ironing board at one end and intermediate its ends to the upper end of the other section and having its legs disposed between the legs of the other section, and a rung for engaging the ends of one section so that the sections may be held in alignment with each other and the frames in an extended position, said. frames being foldable in abutment. with the under face of the ironing board.
