MANS GARTER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 15, 1919.
Application led .Tune 18, 1918. Serial N o. 240,625.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, CLIFFORD L. MEYER, a citizen of the United States, and residing in the borough of Bellevue, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented or discovered new and useful Improvements in Mens Garters, of which the following is a specification.
My invention comprises certain new and useful improvements in garters for mens wear, and more particularly it consists in a permanently closed band of elastic web which encircles the leg of the wearer, said web being of relatively great width, and the ends of the web being held together and reinforced by a strap which overlaps the line of union on both the outer and inner faces of the web and is sewed through the same, the strap depending below the web for the attachment of the elements of the garment clasp.
Novel features of construction and arrangement of parts will appear from the following description.
In the accompanying drawings, whichare intended to illustrate a practical embodiment of my invention without limiting the scope of the same to the construction shown, Figure 1 is an elevation showing my improved garter; Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same taken along the line II-II in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is an enlarged section taken along the line III-III in Fig. l, and Fig. 4 is a cross section taken along the line IV-IV in Fig. 3.
The following is a detailed description of the drawings.
A represents a strip of relatively wide elastic webbing whose ends are doubled back outwardly and sewed together forming a butt union, as shown in Fig. 4.
The butt union of the ends of the web is covered and reinforced by a straight sided strap B, formed by folding a strip of cloth l, such as mercerized cotton, about a narrower strip or interlining 2 of coarser and stiffer textile material, such as crinoline or buckram. In making u the strap, the strip 2 is laid along the longitudinal center line of the interlining 1 and the edges of the latter folded over the former.
Said strap overlaps and covers the line of union between the ends of the webbing and the turned back ends of the same, extending up the outside of the webbing, over the top edge and down the inside thereof, being firmly sewed to the webbing by the stitching a, as shown in the drawings.
The front end of the strap B is tucked up under between the strap and the outer face of the webbing.
The rear end of the strap B is of greater length, depending and being doubled back to form a loop 3 which engages the slotted base plate 4 of the supporter button C. A cross line of stitching Z9 is provided above said stud plate to hold the latter in place.
- The rear end of the strap B is then brought up to the bottom edge of the webbing A where it forms a depending loop 5 to receive the supporter loop D of the garment clasp and the extremity of the rear end of the strap B is then inserted up between the vfront end of the strap and the front face of the webbing, and stitching c sewed through the six thicknesses of strap.
The result is that the union between the ends of the webbing is firm and strong, there is no puckering or gathering of the webbing, and the garter fits the leg smoothly and comfortably supports the hose.
A marked advantage of my improved garter is that it is washable, which' makes it particularly adapted to summer or athletic wear. It is neat and attractive and when made of white material harmonizes with summer underclothing.
'What I desire to claim is t- In a mans garter, the combination of a leg encircling annulus formed by permanently attaching together a length of relatively wide elastic webbing, a narrow straight sided Strap of non-elastic material covering and overlapping the line of attachment and sewed to said webbing, said strap beginning at the front bottom of said annulus, extending up the front, over the top and down the inside of the same, the inside end of said strap being extended below the annulus and folded to form a lower loop and then brought up to the bottom of the annulus and folded again to form an upper loop and the extremity being secured between the upper portion of the strap and the annulus, a supporter button member mounted in the lower loop, and a clasp member mounted in the upper loop, substantially as described.
ySigned at Pittsburgh, Pa., this 15th day of J une, 1918.
CLIFFORD L. MEYER.
