Description
G.- W. BROWN.
FOUNTAIN SYRINGE.
APPLICATION FILED MAR. 3. 1915.
Patnted Nov. 30, 1915.
GEORGE W. BROWN, OF MAYNARD, IMASSACHUSETTS.
FOUNTAIN-'SYRINGE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. BRowN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Maynard, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fountain-Syringes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will en able others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
A fountain syringe consists of a suitable water receptacle usually of flexible material such as rubber. a delivery tube leading therefrom also usually of flexible rubber, and a nozzle at the free end of the tube. In using the apparatus it is a common practice to fill the receptacle at a faucet and then hang up the receptacle at a suitable height so as to give suflicient head to cause the water to flow freely from the nozzle. Unless considerable care is taken in filling the receptacle only to the proper height and also in the manipulation of the receptacle after it is filled, more or less water collects on the outside of the receptacle or slops over the top, so that careful and thorough wiping of the receptacle and delivery tube is necessary before the apparatus can be used with safety and comfort. Also, owing to the flexible character of the receptacle, water is sometimes slopped over the top by accidental agitation of the receptacle while the apparatus is in use.
The object of the present invention is to do away with the inconvenience and discomfort occasioned by the water deposited on the receptacle of a fountain syringe during filling, or which slops over the top of the receptacle as it is being hungup or while the apparatus is in use.
With this object in View the invention contemplates the provision of a suitable drip cup on a portion of the delivery tube which is vertical when the apparatus is in use. said drip cup having its open end directed upwardly so as to receive any water running down the outside surface of the receptacle and prevent this water from continuing along the tube to the vicinity of the nozzle.
The provision of this drip cup affords pro- Specification of Letters Patent.

tection against the carelessness 0r incompetency of a nurse in preparing the apparatus for use, and efiectually prevents any serious or inconvenient results in case of an accidental or other agitation of the receptacle. The drip cup may be of any suitable material. Preferably, however, the drip cup is of yielding material such as rubber and is shaped to closely surround the delivery tube. To enable the tube to be firmly gripped by the'cup without being constricted or collapsed, the tube is provided with a section of rigid material such as glass, upon which the drip cup is mounted.
The present invention will be clearly understood from an inspection of the accom panying drawing, in which;
Figure l is a view in front elevation of a fountain syringe embodying the invention in its preferred form; and Fig. 2' is a detail sectional view of the rigid section of the delivery tube with the drip cup mounted thereon.
In the drawing, 1 indicates a rubber bag forming the fountain of the syringe, 2 the delivery tube of the syringe, and 3 the nozzle. As indicated in th drawing, the delivery tube is made in three sections, the upper and lower sections being of flexible rubber, and the intermediate section 4 being of rigid material such as glass, or hard rubber. The intermediate section 4; is so located that when the apparatus is in use this section lower end tightly gripping the section 4 and having its open upper end directed upward toward the bag 1. Since the drip cup is located on a portion of the delivery tube which stands in a vertical position when the apparatus is in use, it receives and holds any water running down the tube from the outer surface of the bag 1 and prevents this water from passing farther down the tube 211d causing any inconvenience or discomort.
The nature and object of the invention having been indicated, and a preferred embodiment of the invention having been speei cally described, what is claimed is,
A fountain syringe, having, in combination of rigid material having its open end tion, a Water receptacle, a delivery tube directed toward the receptacle. leading therefrom consisting of sections of flexible material: and an intermediate section GEORGE BROWN 5 of rigid material which is vertical when the Witnesses:
syringe is in use, a nozzle at the free end of GEO. E. STEBBINs,
the tube, and a drip cnplocatedr on said" sec-, FRED O. FISH.
