Specification of Letters Ifate t. V Eatented Nov. 16, 1915.
I hpglicatio filed July 2 9, 1915 Serial No. 42,651.
To. all whom it may concern Be it known that I, VAsiLros a subject of the King of Greece, and a resident ojf Acush et, in the county or Bristol and State ofld assachusetts, have invented a new and useful; ivhip of which the following le cifiee i hy invention relates to a new and useful improvement in whips, and: the ohjectofthe same, is to provide a durable whip m which the la h e her em e e ti r P rm n lv ache te'tbe st nk l ma b ade f e m shed e th tee ee-W e h required reach. view showingthe whip complete, with the lash loosely wound and ex? collar member provided at the end of the stock and the engaging end of the lash secured to said. loop the manner shown in, F g. ,1. Fig. 3, is the, same View as F g. 2 hut-v shows a modified method of securing the lash t0 the, loop for permitting the lash to be disengaged from the loop when desired. Fig; 4c, is a view showing the lash-engaging end of-the loop, engaging with a twisted or braided lash in nlace, of the single loop fi f i fd s il i Figs- 1 nd Fi 5 s a section taken o11tline.5 5 Fig. 1, looking in the direction of arrows, showing. the,
w hi i-stoclr-core surrounded byvthe twisted rods, the ends 'of all off which are secured within the handle-sleeve of the whip-stock. Fig. is enlarged View ofthe whip stock showing the twists of yielding rods of ratan, bamboo, or similar material, Wound ahoilt the yielding mating :corerod, the 7 ends of which are shown fitted within and pinned to the handle-sieeve; which isshown sectioned. fig. 7, is a Viewshowing three strands twisted together for strengthening the 121 mm the place of the two Shown in Fig. 1, tlie drawings showing the twists partly unwound for." better. indicating the manne inwhich the sameis rriadeup.
Like numerals'refer to like parts throughout the several views of the drawing.-
Ii th draw g; e um lin ts @1 tirety. representsa whip' which consists "(at the whip-stock 2 which is provided with the handle-sleeved on thelower end ofthe same, and th eftop collar i; at the too, of the sanie wh ch wi he teemin leer d i whin 'stock as shown in Figs 1, 2 and 3.
The Whip-stock 2 is christructed of the cenli r@71 'Qd- 5; which is metallic (such as ra s ste nd pqs essi s yiell ing' qu i ties. Around the central core Qare twi ted the rods; Z, whichinay he of ratan, barnlooo, 1" ther swh'me er L nd q a y s p crosssection and preferably tapering} tored. ee i e tim n ie ei l ii his eller iiieeibet'tat the We; inql id s he, 1
incasedin' the metallic section which be pinned at 11, or otherwise suitably sethe ends of the engaging loop 5 of the whip- I stock. The rods 7 are treated to remain. in such twisted position and may be varnished or otherwise coated {thus furnishing a whipi stock of an attractive appearance and of ex-v ceptional wearing and yielding qualities.
The lash is constructed of calf-skin stri s which may be made preferably of rectangw' lar cross section, starting with the loop-end 8, as shown in Fig.1, and entering the tassel ornament 9, which COIlSlStS of colored fr nges cured to the lash. The strands'12 and 13 of the lash are then twisted for a suitable distance and knotted, over which knot a second tassel ornament 9 may be secured in: the same manner alreadyidescribed in the case of the first one: The strandslQ and 13 are then again twisted for an appreciable distance and again knotted with a tight knot: f .14., Then again, the strands 12 and 18 are twisted for an appreciable distance (say six inchesor more) aiid'knotted with a. tight knot15. As many such twisted and knotted sections may be provided as is found necessary, according to the length of the lash de-,
sired, 'Leaving the knot 15, the strands 12 andf13'are' again twisted and knotted at 16" when the end 17 of the strand 13 is terminated, while the other strand 12 is continued down to form the loop 18.and. returning back to'th'e top, is then wound andwrappcd in spool fashion about the end 17 and finally strung through the loop 18, as shown in Fig. l of the drawing. The same is then continued-in single strand the desired distance and terminates in the button-hole end lf at whichend is secured the common type of end tassel 20, which is alsoprovided with a button-hole end 21, as is commonly used in connection with ordinary whips. I
Fig. 4, shows a, modified lash provided with a twisted loop end, of two strands, which'may be united at the tassel 10 and continued downthrough the lash 4 strands I in section.
' Having thusidescri'bed the parts of my invention in detail, it maybe observed that the same offers a very serviceable and lasting whip 'for' drovers.-the whip-stock possessing yielding qualities and at the same time. being constructed to overcome any abuse that the same may be subiected to in ordinary use without fdangerlof breaking or getting "out of order, as is the case with the r common types of whips.
Also. the lash, whichmay'be-inade of any desired lengthor of any number of strands tosuit the conditions under which the whip is to be used, with the knots and other features provided in the same, converts the lashinto an instrument which, when cast into the air, will produce a loud and attractive whistle and I reportg-which is considered a valuable feeture in whips. The peculiar construction of the lflSll,Wl1lCl1 is made of lasting material, offers a very durable and serviceable whip which is cheap to construct and which may 7 be easily repaired when necessary. .Thus
length of lash may be made to suit the particular conditions for which the same is intended. ,The strands of skins or hides are twisted or braided, as the case may be, while the same are green oroi ly, andare: allowed to settleinto the twisted or braided state.
it may further be observed, that any desired 7 By oiling the lash from'time to time, the I .claim:- 7
