LAST.
To ([71 whom it may I'O'HIUTIL.
Be it known that 1. lViLLuM J. an Fanmxn. a citizen of the l'nited States of America. and a resident of Boston. in the State of Massachusetts. have invented certain new and useful lniprormnents in Lasts. of which the following a specification.
This invention relates to lasts for boots and shoes and has for its object the production of an article of this kind which will be u. e on scientific principles and is adapted for use in the manufacture or" shoes having flexible. shanks.
The invention consists in a last. having ccrta'in peculiarities in shape and construe tion whereby it may be utilized to better advantage tor the purposes for which it is designed to be used.
The inYention further consists in certain novel features of construction and arrangement of parts which will be fully understood by reference to the description of the drawhues and to the claims hereinafter given.
of the drawings. Figure 1 represents an elevation of the outer side of a last embodying the principles of the present invention. Fifi. 2 represents an elevation of the inner side of the same. Fig. 3 represents an in- Yerted plan of the same. Fig. 4 repretransverse section through the shank portion. the cutting plane being on line l'l on Fig. 2. and Fig. 5 represents a transverse section through the fore part. the cutting a 1 H r f 0 plane cents on line o; on r 1g. s.
Similar characters designate like parts throughout the several figures of the drawings. Y
In thedrawings 10 is the body of the last extending from the toe to the heel and provided with the detachable instep member 11 which ma be attached to the body 10 in any a manner.
The heel pru-tion F usual socket 1 5 to res \Y en the l 92 s in use. The bottom o heel is reii reed b}? a metal plate 1; of usual construction. The bottom of the body 10 is so shaped to con orni to the foot hat when a hoe has been niainitactured ther on 'rer will be sustained .(l bones of the toot to serve as support is provided with BlYQ a supporting Specification of Letters Patent.

therefor and on which it was intended that all Walking and running should be done. To this end the last is shaped in accordance with the anaton'n of the foot in ever'v particular. The outside sha k is lov. down so that in the shoe made thererm ample ()(Hll is given for the bones and cushions o. l toot While the bottom of the h with curved projections 13 and lo will form depressions in the inner the inanuhictured shoe nod to r inside and outside cushions of the fore part oi e foot.
()n tr. inside of the last the shank hollowed out to a greater degree than c ioniary in lasts the: forming: a high arch 1T gradually curring upwardly and in- Wardl from. the outer shank 18 which is practicall) in alinenient with the heel and the fore part.
When a shoe has been constructed on a last thus 'fOlllltll a flexible arch on .ide of the shank will be created that will properly distribute the u'ei ht ot the bod} from the heel along the outside of the toot Where the bones and cushions lie and then across the balls of the foot to the big toe. To accomplish this object a wider tread at the bottom of the la is required over that found in the ordinary la It will be observed'that .rle heel of the last is posit oned relative to the part thereof that the center line of l extends thro' of the ball portion bottoni outside of this paratirely in the same piano with th treine toe end somewhat elevated thereti y it is also apparent from an inspection drawings that the i side oi the last fro heel to the base portion 15 is comparat. straight In the arch of the sh cl: i. ally cur inwardly and up central line to the straight l the inside of the last.

It is believed that tho many advantages of the last will be full; apparent Without further description.
. Having thus described my invention,,I claim:
1. A last having the outer side of its bottom substantially fiat f bm toe to heel and the instep provided with a high arch graduallyi curved upwardly Irom said flat portiouto the inner side of said last.
"A last having the outer side of its bot- Zara substantially fiat from toe to heel and the inner side of the last substantially straight from the inner side of the heel part to the inner side of the toe and its shank" gradually arched from the outer edge of the bottom to said straight portion.
3. A last having the outer side of its bottom substantially flat from toe to heel with the medials of its heel and fore parts angularly disposed to each other, said heel and toe parts on the inner. side of the last being connected. by a substantially straight por-' tion Which at the shank gradually curves downwardly'and outwardly to said flat bottom portion at the outside of the last?
