Description
" invention."
i HENRY spnnnINEa, or PHILADELPHIA, `PENrrsrLvANiA.`
l fteaersraanrno- 112,640, dated March 14,1871'.
`ef"11|rir'ircvlnvlser' in Haase-CAR sTARrERs.
l I, nmmscesenoie, tragedy of Philadelphia, ein the Statefof Pennsylvaniahave invented certain `"Improvements inthcApparatns for Facilitating the Starting ofHorse-Carson Railways, of which the fol- :lowing is aspecication. l i l,
` Nature aotdlQbj'ects of the Iiweatio-it.
My invention relates tothe construction and arrangement of certain lrack-bars,eccentric swinging "bars, slotted guides, and retractingcords or chains, to operate,in combination Withfthe bottom frame, shafts,
`or pole, wheels,vaud `jbralri ng-lever of a'czu', substanl f tially as hereinafter ydescribed and `set forth 5 .the object `of my invention being'to'enable thevdriver to readily applythe `tractile pow'erjof` thefll'orses near `to, the
upper parts of the rims ofall thewheels at once in fstarti'ng the carforward, and'also to enable hirn to retract the said rackfbars with facility in the operation. e of brakingthe wheels total-rest the forward motion of VDesezription of Dra/Loring.
Figure lis avertical, longitudinal sect-ion ofthe bottom frame and the"wheels;o iT a car emhodyingmy "Figure 2 isa plan` View oftliefnnder side or bottom l ofthe car, with myirwentiou,` applied.
Figure 3`is a sectionallplanviewof the upper side of the drivers platform, showing the manner of attachl ing `the draftepole audits double-tree to the slotted guide and rack-bars,` `Figure 4 is a like section of thealrifvers platform, showing the mannerof attaching the draft-shafts and "their single-,tree `to theslotted guide and rack-hars. Y,
e lnL,Genrel1)escr&9t5tl 'A The rack-bars are'farranged parallel to each other `and tothe side sills B` B of the car, so as to be directlyabove the teethor-cogs C C, n the inner sides bar there is alseries of notchesor lserrated teeth, a",
and below cach `series theratchet-toothed or notched e eccentric lever D` swings freely in such a manuel: that l I itslteeth `or notches are borneupward by its weighted endd.` i
, Between the teeth a', at `the forward end of each o the rack-bars, and the serrated teeth af', there is a projection, which comes in contact with and slips up V The Schedulerefened to injthese Lettera Patent and making part of the same.
upon a stationary block, a4, which is fixed to the frame at apoint near the forward wheel, and thus raises up Ithe rack-bar when the said bars are being drawn backward toward their inoperative position.
, The ratchet-toothed eccentric levers D D are eachv constructed and applied 4so that, as the rack-bars are being drawn backward, the teeth a," a, catch first in the highest tooth of the levers D D and then. in the succeeding teeth, and in this manner thev said rack bars are raised upward bythe said eccentric levers D D fai' enough to free their teeth,c' a', entirely from the" ebgs O G ofthe wheels, (see dottedlines in ng. 1.)4
The teeth of the levers D D having passed ont of contact with the teeth a a of the rack-bars A A, the
said levers D D fall over rearward, and remain suspended loosely on their fulcrums Auntil the rack-bars A A, on being drawn forward to pull the` wheels around, slidev over them, as represented bythe full lines in g. 1.
, The slotted guide or guides E- Eare pivoted securely to the front end ofthe hoor-frame of the cai-,and the pole or shafts F, with their double or single-tree, j" f', attached, slide in the said slotted guide or guides, respectively, the ends of the single or doubletree being .respectively connected with the for-Ward ends of the two rack-bars A A by means of suitable chains or ropes cf e', of such lengths that, when the pole or shafts.
` are drawn near tothe outer end of the slot or slots in E, the said rack-bars will be in the position represented in iig. 3 and when the said pole or shafts are slipped back to the rear end of said slots, the raclcbars can be drawn back (as'will be explained) to the posi- Y tion shown by the .full lines in lig.' 1.
l For the purpose of enabling thel driver to retract the rack-bars A A, an additional pulley, G, isxed on the lower end of the shaft of the usual braking handlever, and from this pulley G a chain or rope,`g', and sliding bar g, extend back to two chains g,l which, guided by pulleys, connect with the respective rear ends of the said rack-bars A A, as shown in fig. 2, so that the driver, in operating the braking-lever, causes, at the same time, the said rack-bars to he drawn back into their inoperative positions, (see lig. l.)
It willv be understood without further description that, when the horses are'started, the rackfbars A A will be drawn forward, causing their teeth a' to catch in the cogs C" G neartheupper part of the rims of all the wheels at once, and thus simultaneously rotate thel wheels or start a loaded car forward without straining the horses,- as heretofore, or with much less effort than' if the draft was made directly from the axles'of the wheels; and that an inequality in the burden of the respectiveA ends of the carf at any time will not,
canse any difference in the amount of power required i swinging levers D D, the stationary block a4, the to start the ear, because all the wheels are operated slotted guides E E, pole ol' shafts F, and chains or upon at the same time by the rack-bars. ropes e e', the pulley G ou the braking-lever, chain or It will also be seen that the rack-bars are retracted rope g, bar g, and chains or ropes g", the said parts by the driver in braking the wheels, and tha-t the said being constructed and arranged to operate in combi-- bars are, at the same time, lifted entirely clear of the nation with the bottom frame and the four wheels of eogs in the wheels, so as to prevent any rattling, noise, the car, substantially as and for the purpose hereinor friction with the said wheels. i before set forth and described.
Glam A. HENRY SCHREINER.
Wltnesses: I claim as my invention- BENJ. MoRIsoN,
The sliding rack-bars A A, the toothed eccentric WM. H. MORISON.
