Abstract

PURPOSE:To reduce center segregation ratio in a cast slab by propagating ultrasonic wave into the cast slab from the surface thereof just after almost of or the whole molten metal in the cast slab by continuous casting solidifies. CONSTITUTION:The ultrasonic wave propagating horn 4 arranged between support rolls 3 at secondary cooling zone is pushed on the cast slab surface to propagate the ultrasonic wave having the prescribed frequency into the cast slab. In this case, under condition of >=0.8 solid phase ratio fS by the result, which the solid phase ratio at the position setting the horn 4 is found by heat transfer calculation, the impressing of the ultrasonic wave is very effective to reduction of center segregation. Further, data existing right direction from fS=1 in axis of abscissa in the figure corresponds to impressing of the ultrasonic wave at the position, where the cast slab perfectly solidifies or at the position of a little behind perfectly solidification, show that the impressing thereof is also effective for the reduction of the center segregation.
