Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain the titled compound useful as a raw material for deodorants in high yield under mild conditions, by oxidizing ethylene glycol and/or glycolaldehyde with a gas containing oxygen in an organic compound solvent having no hydroxyl group in the presence of a specific catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: Ethylene glycol or glycolaldehyde or both are oxidized with a gas containing oxygen in an organic compound solvent having no hydroxyl group in the presence of a catalyst consisting of (A) at least one selected from Pt and Pd and (B) at least one selected from Cd, Cu and Pb to give the aimed compound. The components (A) and (B) are usually used with a carrier, which is ordinarily used as a carrier for a platinum group metal, e.g. active carbon. The amount of the components (A) and (B) supported on the carrier is preferably 0.1W40wt%.
EFFECT: The raw material can be produced industrially in a large amount and available at a low cost.
