Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the title compound economically in high yield and selectively by the oxidative decomposition of a vicinal diol with H2O2, hydroperoxides, peroxides or an O2-containing gas, in the presence of a catalyst comprising Ru or its compound.
CONSTITUTION: Preparation of an aldehyde (e.g. adipaldehyde, etc.), a ketone or a carboxylic acid by the oxidative decomposition of a vicinal diol (e.g. 1,2-cyclohexanediol, etc.) with an oxidizing agent, characterized in that said oxidizing agent is selected from hydrogen peroxide, hydroperoxides, peroxides and a gas containing molecular oxygen and the reaction is carried out in the presence of a catalyst comprising Ru or its compound (e.g. RuCl3, etc.). The catalyst is preferably used in an amount of 0.001W0.1 gram atom as the metal atom to one mole of the vicinal diol, and the oxidizing agent is preferably used in an amount of 10W0.1mol to one mole of the vicinal diol. The reaction is carried out at 0W150°C. A vicinal diol of alicyclic series or a saccharide is suitable as the vicinal diol.
