Abstract

PURPOSE: To greatly enhance hot workability of two phase stainless steel consisting of 10 to 75% of ferrite and the remaining austenite, the quantity of P, N, and effective S which unfavorably affects the hot workability are limited to a value less than specified.
CONSTITUTION: A steel composition is specified as C: 0.005 to 2.0%, Si: 0.01 to 3%, Mn<15%, Cr: 15 to 35%, Ni: 10 to 30%, Al<0.05%, one or more of Nb <2%, Mo<6%, Ti<1%, Cu<3%, and less than 0.002% of ΔS of the formula which is an effective S unfavarably affecting hot workability of the steel. Or alternatively, the composition may include less than 0.03% of one or more of Ca, Mg, Y, Ce, La which will fix S and convert to a harmless compound, and simultaneously the hot-work-affected elements are reduced so that P<0.04% and N<0.01%. The process thus provides a two phase stainless steel consisting of 10 to 75% of ferrite phase and the balance being austenite phase with an enhanced hot workability.
