Apparatus for storing radio-active specimens comprises a concrete cell 2 surrounding an iron or lead casing 4 having an aperture 4b normally closed by a door 5. Within the casing 4 is a drum 6 rotatably mounted by shafts 7, 8, this drum, which is of shielding material, e.g. lead, having a recessed wall 6b to which are secured five support members 17 arranged one above the other and each having six recesses for receiving specimen-containing cups 18. To remove or insert the cups the drum is rotated by a handle 16 through a shaft 13 and gearing 11, 12 to align the selected vertical row of five cups with the aperture 4b, the cups being handled by power-operated means from a cut-off position known remotely controlled means. Additional protection may be provided by lead or cast iron blocks 19, 20.
