Abstract
933,355. Machine tool details. WARNER & SWASEY CO. Jan. 9, 1961 [March 4, 1960], No. 819/61. Class 83 (3). [Also in Group XXIV] In an hydraulically or pneumatically controlled cam mechanism, particularly for causing a tool-carrying slide 1 to be moved linearly by a motor-driven cam drum 5 towards or away from a workpiece 4 upon manual or automatic actuation of a valve 18, the drum 5 has a deep helical cam groove 23 interconnecting shallow arcuate grooves 21, 22 and is driven by a reversible motor 11. The helical groove has arcuate terminal portions of gradually decreasing depth merging with the shallow arcuate grooves to form a circumferential groove at each end of the drum 5. The cam drum is engaged by a roller 14 on a piston 12 in the slide 1, the piston being retained in an inner or outer position by a spring plunger 28. The piston slides in a cavity 13 coupled by a flexible hose 19 to the valve 18, which connects the cavity either to a pump 15 or to a reservoir 16. In the upper position shown, the roller 14 rides in the left-hand circumferential groove as the drum 5 rotates and the slide 1 remains stationary. When desired, the valve 18 is actuated in timed relation with the rotating drum to admit fluid to the cavity 13, whereby the roller 14 is projected downwards so that it follows the deep helical groove 23 and moves the slide to the right. Meanwhile, the valve 18 is actuated to connect cavity 13 to the reservoir 16 so that as the roller reaches and rides in the right-hand circumferential groove it is lifted to return the piston 12 to its inner position. The slide 1 is moved to the left by similar actuation of the valve 18 with the motor 11 reversed. The slide 1 is mounted on spaced ways 2 and may be retained in its forward and rear positions by spring detents. The motor 11 and valve 18 may be controlled by switches on the turret of a machine tool.
