Abstract

Sulphonated condensation products are obtained by condensing an oily condensation product obtained in an alkaline medium from one or more monohydric or polyhydric phenols and formaldehyde with a hydroxynaphthalene sulphonic acid, after-condensing the resultant resin with sulphite waste liquor at an elevated temperature and adjusting the pH of the mixture to 2,8 to 3,6 before or after the after-condensation. The reaction mixture may be concentrated and dried. The oily condensation products of phenols may be obtained from monohydric phenols such as phenol, cresol or xylenol, or from polyhydric phenols such as, pyrocatechol or resorcinol. The products are tannins. Examples are given.
