Abstract

Condensation products fast to light are obtained by reacting in a first stage one or more sulphonated phenols with urea and formaldehyde and reacting this condensate in a second stage with one or more phenols and formaldehyde, in the first stage 1 to 1,5 mols. of urea and 1,7 to 2,2 mols. of formaldehyde and in the second stage 0,5 to 3 mols. of phenol and 0,5 to 3 mols. of formaldehyde being used for each mol. of sulphonated phenol originally used. Suitable phenols which may be used singly or in the form of technical mixtures in the first stage in sulphonated form and in the second stage in unsulphonated form include phenol itself, cresols, xylenols, halogenophenols and bis-phenols such as 4,41-dihydroxydiphenylpropane and 4,41-dihydroxydiphenylsulphone. The products may be used as tanning substances, as auxilaries in dyeing leather or as dispersing agents, e.g. for dyestuffs. Specification 478,280 is referred to.
