Abstract

898,895. Nuclear reactors; handling nuclear reactor fuel elements. BABCOCK & WILCOX Ltd. Feb. 11, 1959 [Feb. 12, 1958], No 4671/58. Class 39(4). In a gas-cooled graphite-moderated reactor for ship propulsion, tubes serving as guides for the control rods are articulated and may also serve as fuel element charge shoots after removal of the control rod positioning apparatus. As shown, Fig. 2, an articulated tube 21 extends from the biological shield 24 through the pressure vessel 23 to the top plate 22 of the core 11 and guides a control rod 20 suspended by a cable 35 from a drum 38 driven by a motor 36. A piston arrangement 39 interposed between the cable 35 and rod 20 enables the rod to be driven downwards in an emergency by a CO 2 bottle 44 as disclosed in Specification 898,894. A support member 31 co-extensive with the tube 21 is rotatably mounted in a recess 34 and has a cylindrical upper part 32 surrounding the tube 21, the lower part 33 being of arcuate section. Prior to a fuelling operation the rod 20 is fully inserted, the cable 35 de-clutched therefrom and the winding gear 36, 38 removed and replaced by a charging machine 17, Fig. 3. The lower part of tube 21 comprises three lengths 46, 47, 48 interconnected by bellows hinges 49, 50, the length 48 being connected to the upper part of the tube by a bellows hinge 51. The lengths 46, 47 are both telescopic and the length 46 is connected to a foot 52 by a bellows hinge 54. Links 55, 56 controlled by a Bowden cable (not shown) releasably connected to the machine 17 enable the tube 21 to be located above a selected fuel channel 45, the foot 52 resting in a recess 53, the correct orientation of the tube 21 and support 31 having been previously obtained by a drive member 60 which rotates the parts 21, 31. When the tube 21 has the configuration A a fuel element may be lifted from the core by a grab cable (not shown) into the tube length 47, the tube then being brought into configuration B and the fuel element raised into the machine 17. A new fuel element is similarly inserted by moving the tube from position B to position A.
