Abstract

875,003. Ball-and-socket joints. GLACIER METAL CO. Ltd. Jan. 25, 1960 [March 2, 1959], No. 7215/59. Class 65(2). A ball joint comprises a socket formed by two part-spherical cup-like elements 3, 4 engaging and partially enclosing the ball 1 and of material having substantial structural strength with their inner surfaces formed of self-lubricating material, these elements having adjacent edge portions which lie approximately parallel to and on opposite sides of a diametral plane of the ball and being provided with outwardly projecting circumferential flanges 3a, 4a, and a clamping ring 5 embracing these flanges and including spaced inwardly projecting parts 6, 7 lying adjacent to the respective outer faces of the flanges and acting as abutments to prevent separation of the elements. Preferably a resilient ring 8, which may be of rubber or plastic or a metallic spring such as a Bellville washer, is interposed between one or both of the flanges and the respective part 6, 7. The clamping ring may comprise a grooved metal strip bent into a closed loop, the ends extending away in close contact to form an attachment part. The part spherical elements may comprise a steel backing to which is applied and bonded porous bronze impregnated with polytetrafluoroethylene (P.T.F.E.) with or without an admixture of lead and with or without a thin surface layer of P.T.F.E. or P.T.F.E. and lead. The ball may have two coaxial pins extending one through each of the elements, or may be bored and mounted on a rod. Dirt seals 21 of metal or rubber may be provided.
