Abstract

870,061. Heating yarns by electric resistances. PYE Ltd. May 22, 1959 [May 28, 1958], No. 17004/58. Class 39(3). [Also in Group IX] In the heat treatment of a filamentary material passing along a focal axis of an elliptical reflecting chamber in which an electrical heating element is disposed along the other focal axis, means are provided for effecting relative displacement between the material and the focal axis along which it is normally located, or for deflecting the heat rays from this axis, should for example, the speed of movement of the material decrease or a previous-, processine step cease to function normally As shown in Fig. 1, heat rays from the heating element 3 are reflected and focused on to a moving nylon yarn 6 by two semielliptical reflectors 1 and 2. Reflector 2 is supported by a rod 8 pivoted at its ends 9 and normally held stationary by means of a spring 10 and, the armature 12 of an electromagnetic relay acting in opposition. If the speed of the yarn decreases or if the processing effected by rotating wheels 15a, 15b is not functioning properly, switches S1, S2 are opened, relay 11 is de-energized and reflector 2 automatically turns about the rod 8. The relay circuit may also be opened if the tension of the yarn falls outside certain limits. The tensioning device includes guide pulley 16, spring 17, and contacts C1. Overheating of the heater 3 is prevented by the device 5 in which contact C2 in the supply circuit is temporarily opened on expansion of the heater. In modifications, reflectors 1, 2 are replaced by a single completely elliptical reflector, or, Fig. 3, a baffle 19 turns into position 19a to interrupt the heat rays, or, Fig. 4, the yarn 6 passes several times through the reflector assembly 1, 2 for preheating before passing along the focal axis. The heating element may be a straight wire or a coil within or about a tubular ceramic support.
