A fuel composition for a nuclear reactor comprising a suspension of solid particles in a liquid medium, is characterized in that at least a substantial number of the particles consist of a core of fissile material and a surface layer of fertile or moderating material. The particles may comprise a core of an oxide of uranium 235 and a surface layer of substantial thickness of natural thorium dioxide, or a core of plutonium dioxide and a surface layer of substantial thickness of an oxide of natural uranium, and may be suspended in water, a molten salt, a molten metal, or an organic liquid,
