Abstract
958,088. Reactors. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. March 25,1963 [April 13, 1962], No. 14348/62. Heading G6C. A reactor comprises a core of fast neutron multiplying material, below the core a bed of moderator material, and passages in the bed to receive the multiplying material in the event of its melting, the arrangement being such that the reactivity of the multiplying material, when in the bed, is reduced by absorption of moderated neutrons. As shown, a cylindrical core 11 of fuel elements of uranium enriched with its fissile isotope and/or supplemented with plutonium is supported by means (not shown) above a bed 13 of graphite containing a neutron absorber such as boron. Liquid metal coolant from an inlet plenum 14 is pumped upwardly through the core. Fast neutrons leaking downwards are moderated and absorbed by the red whilst those leaking outwards are absorbed in a breeder blanket 16. Should the core 11 melt the multiplying material flows into passages 15 in the bed where the neutron flux is moderated and absorbed. In another embodiment (Fig. 2, not shown) the lower ends of the passages 15 are open so that the molten material may pass therethrough.
