Abstract

849,342. Hydro-pneumatic shock absorbers. MACKERLE, J. June 5, 1957 [June 5, 1956], No. 17887/57. Class 108(3). A hydro-pneumatic shock absorber comprises a differential piston 2 operating in a liquid filled cylinder 1 with damping action resulting from valve controlled ports 11, the liquid in the cylinder 1 being separated from air in a chamber 9 by means of a resilient cylindrical diaphragm 8; a liquid reservoir 15, a replenishing pump comprising a cylindrical bore 18a, a pump piston 18, by-pass ports 19, 20, a pressure valve 22, and an inlet valve 21. In operation, on compression movement of the piston 2, liquid is forced from the cylinder 1 through a port 6 into an annular chamber defined by a sleeve 7. The liquid passes through ports 10a in the sleeve 7 into a further annular chamber bounded by the diaphragm 8. On rebound, air pressure in the chamber 9 acts on the diaphragm 8 to force liquid back into the cylinder 1. The diaphragm is prevented from being forced through the ports 10a by resilient tongues 10. On an increase in static load, the outlet of the port 19 to the pump cylinder 18a is cut-off by the piston 18. Further oscillatory movements of the piston 2 together with the pump pistons 18, cause the latter to draw in fresh liquid from the reservoir via the valve 21 and an external conduit 19a. On the compression strokes, this is forced through the pressure valve 22 and a port 22a into the cylinder 1. On a decrease in static load, the pump piston 18 eventually uncovers the port 20 which connects liquid in the cylinder 1 with the interior of the pump cylinder 18a. On inward movements of the pump piston 18 this liquid is then forced back through the port 19 and conduit 19a to the reservoir 15. A channel 12 disposed between high pressure and low pressure seals for the piston 2, is connected with the reservoir 15.
