In apparatus for adding a reagent to a flowing liquid, a part of the stream is diverted to a chamber 11 where it is dosed with the reagent before it is returned to the main liquid flow, the reagent 53, when in powder form, being held in the chamber whilst the diverted liquid flows into an expansible bag 31 and out of the bag through passages 321 in a bottom member 32; and, when in liquid form, is contained in the bag 31, Fig. 2, whereby the pressure of the diverted liquid flow squeezes reagent out of the bag at 33 into the liquid as it leaves the chamber 11 to be returned to the main flow. A restriction 42 generates the pressure head to produce the diverted flow through the pipes 43. In Fig. 1, the member 32 is guided by a central rod 122 and, because of its weight and convexity, keeps in contact with the powder 53 as it diminishes in quantity, to ensure that the liquid is contacted with the reagents. In a modification, the expansible bag 32 is of bellows form, and the member 31 is flat and is provided with a central outlet member for the diverted liquid, radial passages in the member directing the liquid into the powder. A by-pass, controlled by a valve, is arranged between the pipes 43, 44, the pipe 43 being connected to a central opening in the cover 14 to direct the liquid into the bellows.
